There are many ways to encourage speech and language skills at home. Some simple activities to incorporate into your daily routine include:
Ask your child to help set the table or put things away, and give directions that include prepositions like above/below, next to, between when asking them to do the tasks. For example:
Put the remote next to the book
Set the forks next to the plates
Put your shoes next to the door and put your backpack in front of the bench
During your evening routine, use before/after or prepositions in your directions. For example:
brush your teeth before you put on your pajamas
fill the dog's water bowl after you pack your backpack
Bake together and work on sequencing (the order of recipe directions) or before/after
Watch TV together (an educational video on a topic of interest would be great) or read a book together and discuss unfamiliar vocabulary that you come across (e.g. Oh, the show said leopards are predators. Do you know what predator means?)
Use the calendar and time concepts to discuss scheduling. For example, when looking at your family calendar, you might say: Today is Wednesday October 5. On Saturday we're going to visit grandma. How many days until we see her?
