We had an exciting start to the school year in the Meyer library! So many new things to explore and learn, so many new faces to welcome to the building, and so many books to read together!
All students in both Pre-K and K got to begin the school year by learning about all the different things we do can do in the library, and one of those things is to build on the Lego walls!
All Meyer students also learned how to check out library books! It's always a special day when students get to check out their first books from the Meyer library.
Pre-K students started their first unit, "All About Me." We read books about school, feelings, family, and more! After reading the book That's Not My Name! by Anoosha Syed, students drew their own faces and 1 thing that is special about themselves.
Pre-K students also drew pictures of how they were feeling that day after reading the book Rita and Ralph's Rotten Day by Carmen Agra Deedy.
Pre-K students started their fall unit at the end of the month, and we kicked it off with full-day Pre-K students experiencing some fall-themed building centers. They built scarecrows, pumpkins, apple trees, and more with several different building materials.
Once a month, Kindergarten students will participate in a STEAM activity instead of checking out books. Our first STEAM activity was all about the classic book Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by Bill Martin Jr. Students worked together in small groups to build their own letter trees, draw the finished product, and then count the letters on their tree and write the number on their paper. They did a great job working as teams!
I'm looking forward to a fun-filled school year with all our Meyer Shining Stars! Check back here next month to see everything we will be doing in the library in October.
We had lots of fall fun in October! Pre-K learned all about the season of fall, apples, and pumpkins. Full day Pre-K students decorated their own fall trees with colorful leaf stickers.
All Pre-K students did an apple building activity in small groups after reading the book Ten Apples Up On Top. Instead of stacking apples up like they did in the book, students worked together to build structures out of wooden blocks for their apples to sit on top. Afterwards, they drew a picture of what they built. Everyone did a great job demonstrating teamwork and creativity!
Kindergarten students made their own play-doh pumpkin patches, with pumpkins of every color and shape, after reading The Legend of Spookley the Square Pumpkin. So festive!
The fall fun will continue in November!
This November, I am thankful for all the fun I get to have with the Meyer Shining Stars in the library!
Most of the Pre-K classes spent a couple weeks learning all about space, and we read some fun space books in the library. The full day Pre-K students also got to draw their own faces inside an astronaut's space suit and practice tracing the word "astronaut."
We talked a lot this month about being thankful, and people we would like to thank. We read The Thank You Book by Mo Willems, featuring the characters Elephant and Piggie, and had our own "thank-o-rama" inspired by them! We also read the book Thank You, Omu by Oge Mora and drew which foods we would take to Omu's house for a community meal.
Pre-K also started a new unit about community helpers, and they got to pretend to do many different jobs with some community helper play-doh mats. They were mechanics, veterinarians, weather forecasters, and more!
Kindergarten students got to do some activities based on one of their favorite series, the Jasper Rabbit "creepy" books. First we read Creepy Carrots and worked in small groups to build fences to keep the carrots contained, just like Jasper does in the book. Then we read Creepy Pair of Underwear and every student got to design their own creepy pair of underwear. A creepy good time was had by all!
