The Illinois Social Science Standards and the C3 Framework

The Illinois Learning Standards (ILS) define what all students in all public schools should know and be able to do in the six core areas as a result of their elementary and secondary schooling.

The College, Career and Civic Life (C3) Framework is a way to get students thinking, researching and

questioning the concepts presented in social studies. By exploring the four dimensions covered by the framework,

students gain a more critical understanding of their world.

• Dimension 1 - Developing Questions and Planning Inquiries

• Dimension 2 - Applying Disciplinary Concepts and Tools

• Dimension 3 - Evaluating Sources and Using Evidence

• Dimension 4 - Communicating Conclusions and Taking Informed Action
