The vast majority of students in French immersion are from unilingual English families. The program was designed for these parents. Many anglophone parents have had success advocating for and supporting their students in French immersion. Promoting literacy in the first language (e.g., reading to your child) is an important way of supporting French language learning. (Noël, 2003; Culligan, 2008; Cummins, 2000; Clay, 2000)
Google can be our best friend or our worst enemy. It is a useful tool for research and for accessing online dictionaries. But:
1. When students are required to complete a research project, it is expected that they will visit authentic and verifiable sites, summarize their findings and write their texts using their own words in French.
2. More recently, we have noticed that students do not fully understand the meaning of plagiarism or copyright. Some directly copy /paste information from a Google site unto a Google doc. and then select Google translate to hand in their French research project.
3. They also use photos and other visuals that have been copyrighted and are not deemed available for free publication.
So... to help your son/ daughter succeed in completing project, encourage them to summarize ideas, to select visuals from sites such as Creative Commons and, most importantly, to write their texts in French. They can then revise and edit their texts using the tools recommended below.
