Dear Students, Parents, Staff, and Community,
Thank you for a top-notch school year! Just as Remy the rat from Pixar's "Ratatouille" pursued his passion and achieved his dreams, each of you has accomplished so much this year. I wish you a summer full of outdoor activities, good books, and quality time together.
Considering all that you've achieved in one year, imagine what you can accomplish in the future. Remember, just like Remy, no dream is too big if you have the courage to pursue it.
Have a great break—you've earned it! (/◔ ◡ ◔)/

Hello Families!
I'd like to share the highlights of our recent activities and events, showcasing the amazing talents and adventurous spirit of our students! It has been wildly busy and I'll try to share it all!
Two weeks ago, our students demonstrated incredible athleticism and sportsmanship at the UVIC track meet. They competed with enthusiasm in a variety of events such as the 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, and the 4x100m relay races. Their dedication and hard work were great, and we couldn't be prouder of their achievements!
Last week we were honoured to participate in a series of Indigenous activities led by local community members. These enriching experiences provided our students with a deeper understanding and appreciation of indigenous traditions and culture, fostering a sense of community and respect.
Our talent show last week was a resounding success, thanks to the outstanding performances of our students and the exceptional efforts of those who served as MCs and stagehands. Their creativity and confidence shone brightly, making the event a memorable one for everyone involved.
Finally, we had an absolute blast during our Fun Day filled with wild games, including the ever-popular throwing game BIG LEAGUE ALLSTARS - congrats to the winners of the day, Gavin and Lea. The excitement peaked when the Saanich Fire Department arrived, treating us to a refreshing and exhilarating water spray from their firetruck. It was a perfect way to cool off and enjoy the summer weather.
The excitement doesn't end here! We still have several fantastic events to look forward to, including a relaxing and fun-filled beach day specifically for our grade 5 students, a special ceremony to celebrate our grade 5 students as they move on to new adventures, and an invigorating hike up Mt. Doug/PKOLS mountain, offering stunning views and a great way to wrap up our school year.
Thank you to all students, staff, and community members who have made these events possible. Your support and participation are what make our school community so vibrant and dynamic.
Stay tuned for more updates and photos from our upcoming events!
You could say we're "on track" for a fantastic end to the school year!

Our class of Division 17 at Lochside has been buzzing with excitement and activity. Our class had the opportunity to experience a multicultural potluck, where the entire school transformed into a vibrant hub of diverse culinary delights. It was great to see the kids eagerly trying new foods, broadening their palates, and embracing different cultures whether it was Nanaimo bars or a dish that originated somewhere else. A massive thank you goes to our incredible ELL team for organising this massive event and to our amazing parent volunteers who helped with food setup and ensured everything ran smoothly.
Another highlight of our recent activities was the visit from the Island Hoppers Precision Skipping Team. This non-profit organization is dedicated to promoting the sport of jump rope within our local communities. With nearly twenty-five years of competitive skipping experience on Vancouver Island, the Island Hoppers are renowned for their dynamic and spirited performances. Adding to the excitement, some of our own Division 17 students had the opportunity to present at the skipping event, showcasing their budding skills and contributing to the lively atmosphere. It was not just a performance; it was an inspirational display of dedication and passion for the sport. Our students were inspired by their enthusiasm and are eager to try out some new skipping techniques during recess and PE classes.
In addition to these exciting events, our class has been hard at work on their biome projects. Each student delved into the fascinating world of biomes, researching and creating detailed presentations. The culmination of this project involved self-evaluations, where students reflected on their work. They assessed whether they completed their projects, how effectively they used their time, and identified the most enjoyable aspects of their research. This self-assessment process encouraged students to think critically about their learning journey and provided valuable insights into their own work habits and interests.
Overall, the past few weeks have been filled with enriching opportunies for Division 17 and there are many more things to come in the remaining days! From exploring new cultures through food to being inspired by elite skippers and reflecting on their academic projects, our Grade 4/5 students have embraced every opportunity for growth and learning. We look forward to continuing this momentum and seeing what new adventures lie ahead.

Hello Families and Friends of Division 17!
We've had an exciting few weeks full of hands-on learning and exploration! Our Grade 4/5 students have been engaging in various activities that promote safety, cooperation, scientific discovery, cultural appreciation, and mathematical skills. Here's a peek into what we've been up to:
Our students took the initiative to alter the landscape of our outdoor play area to make it better and safer for everyone. In collaboration with Mrs. Miller's class, we worked together as buddies to fill holes, creating a smoother and more enjoyable space for all. This activity not only enhanced our play environment but also taught the importance of teamwork and cooperation. Additionally, we're excited to start building our bug home this week, adding another layer of fun and learning to our outdoor activities. It's amazing to see everyone coming together to improve our play space!
We were thrilled to have the Science Ventures organization from the University of Victoria visit us. They helped us discover how Earth materials change as they move through the rock cycle and how these materials can be used as natural resources. This interactive session was a fantastic opportunity for students to learn about the Earth as a system and explore ways we can act as stewards of our environment like we did with our salmon. We are now more aware of the importance of protecting our planet.
A highlight of our learning journey has been watching the Welcome Pole being carved by the talented Bear Horne. We learned about the art of carving and the significance of cedar in Indigenous culture. This experience was incredibly enriching, allowing us to appreciate the craftsmanship and cultural heritage behind the Welcome Pole. We're super excited to see it when it is complete and placed outside our school!
In the learning commons with Mrs. Malloy, we've been diving into the world of poetry using methods from Adrienne Gear. Students have been learning about metaphors, similes, and other poetic devices. This creative exploration has been both fun and educational, helping students to express themselves in new and imaginative ways. Like explorers discovering hidden treasures, our students are uncovering the beauty of language and the power of words.
Here's a simile to describe our class: Our class is like a garden in full bloom, each student a unique flower learning and growing together.
In math, we've been focusing on measurement. Coming up soon, we'll be learning to tell time with both analog and digital clocks with the goal to become more proficient in using them and calculating elapsed time. Additionally, we've been exploring regular and irregular polygons and calculating their perimeters. It's been a fun challenge, and students are making great progress!
Stay tuned for more updates and photos showcasing our learning experiences. I'm proud of the hard work and enthusiasm of our students. Thank you for your continued support!
>>>> Mr. O'Connor
PS: Track has started! It looks like we will have 100% of our class coming to UVIC once their permission forms are in! This is the best opportunity for kids to try out a fun, supportive and exciting day up at UVIC.

Have you ever gently blown on a dandelion and watched their puffy seeds take flight? Those delicate, parachute-like seeds detach effortlessly and are seemingly fragile. Yet, surprising as it may seem, dandelion seed puffballs possess remarkable resilience! If you drop a whole dandelion head into water, then take it out again. You'll find it's hardly damaged at all!
Our class recently explored this fascinating concept after our trail walk. With some experiments, we found that dropping a whole dandelion head into water and then removing it revealed its surprising resilience, almost as if it hadn't been submerged at all See the video below to see!

In Language Arts - we're centered around the captivating universe of Harry Potter. Our students are not just readers but active participants in a magical journey of learning and creativity. As we delve into this enchanting literary realm, our focus extends beyond the pages of the books, creating an immersive experience that encompasses various aspects of education.
Firstly, students are navigating the intricacies of managing schedules, a skill crucial for academic success and future endeavors. This practical application within the magical context of the wizarding world adds a delightful and relatable dimension to their learning experience.
Comprehension skills are honed through an exploration of the rich narrative tapestry of Harry Potter. Students are encouraged to delve deep into the storyline, extracting meaning, making connections, and enhancing their ability to comprehend complex texts.
Adrienne Gear, a renowned literacy educator, emphasizes key strategies to support students in comprehending novels. Here are three important tips from her:
"Connect and Visualize" Strategy:
Gear encourages students to make personal connections to the text by relating it to their own experiences, feelings, or prior knowledge. This strategy helps students engage with the material on a deeper level, making it more meaningful. Additionally, visualizing the scenes and events in their minds as they read enhances comprehension by creating mental images that support understanding.
"Questioning" Technique:
Developing strong questioning skills is crucial for effective comprehension. Gear suggests teaching students to ask questions before, during, and after reading. Encouraging inquiries helps students actively engage with the text, prompting them to seek answers and make predictions. This approach fosters a more critical and analytical approach to reading, promoting a deeper understanding of the content.
"Inferential Thinking" Approach:
Gear advocates for teaching students how to infer – to read between the lines and draw conclusions based on the information provided in the text. This involves encouraging students to make educated guesses, consider implicit meanings, and analyze characters' motivations. Developing inferential thinking skills allows students to go beyond surface-level comprehension and explore the underlying layers of a novel.
By incorporating these strategies into reading activities, students can enhance their comprehension skills and develop a more profound connection with the novels they encounter in their literacy journey.
The highlight of our unit is undoubtedly the magical wand crafting process. This hands-on activity involves planning, ensuring safety while using hot glue guns, adapting designs as needed, and applying problem-solving skills. Beyond the craftsmanship, students are weaving their own stories of magic and adventure through creative writing. This process not only fosters imagination but also refines essential writing skills, including the critical steps of editing and rectifying mistakes on the computer. We can't wait to share this with you when we're all finished.
As a result, our classroom is buzzing with a magical energy. Witnessing the dedication and enthusiasm our students bring to this magical learning experience fills us all with immense pride.

Hello! Wrapping up our first busy week back at school, today was both cool and exciting. The day was packed with various meaningful learning experiences, including an impromptu science experiment - how long will our 500 ml of water take to freeze that we taped to the window at 11:08 am. Read more to find out!
Early in the week, we jumped into writing/visual narratives about our winter breaks in the form of graphic novels. We carried on in Language Arts with Wednesday's highlight - "Book Tastings," brought to you from our wonderful Teacher Librarian, Mrs. Malloy. Cheers, Mrs. Malloy! It's an immersive activity that allowed students to try a variety of literary genres and encourages them to try new things. We also finsihed up on our last unit of spelling for a while. Instead, our class will now focus on a large Harry Potter-themed adventure. See the two videos for audio readings of the first two chapters.
Entering the realm of Social Studies, our students have undertaken the substantial study titled "Two Worlds Meet." This exploration focuses on the significant impact of the pursuit of valuable natural resources on the transformation of Canada's land, people, and communities. The interactions between First Peoples and Europeans, integral to this historical narrative, are characterized by a complex interplay of conflict and cooperation. These dynamics have enduring consequences, and continue to shape the identity of Canada. This week was particularly special as all the 4/5 classes collaborated, immersing themselves in learning about the Settlers of Catan-style games we'll play as well as a bunch of mini lessons to prepare them for this journey. The dynamic interactions and shared experiences created an neat atmosphere full of teamwork and exploration. Many students are learning to play Settlers of Catan at home in preparation!
As for Physical Education, our energetic week included the spirited basketball game of "bump!" and invigorating walks in the crisp Arctic air. The students embraced the opportunity to explore the frozen environment and really had a fun time.
Stay tuned for more exciting updates, where each day brings the unexpected. Our journey may not involve wands and spells yet.... but every step is a chance for growth and transformation. If you have any questions or would like to know more about our adventures, don't hesitate to reach out.

Dear Parents and Guardians,
We are thrilled to share some exciting news about the recent project your children have been working on in class—the creation of fantastic felt foxes!
Our students have been exploring the world of design, hands-on skills, and technology through a fun and creative project that complimented our read aloud novel, Pax by Sarah Pennypacker. The project is part of the Applied Design, Skills, and Technologies curriculum, which aims to harness the natural curiosity, inventiveness, and practical instincts of our students.
During this project, your child has had the opportunity to design, make, and apply various skills to bring their felt foxes to life. From selecting materials to crafting and finishing touches, the students have been actively engaged in a learning experience that goes beyond traditional textbooks.
Why is this important, you might wonder? Well, in today's world, being able to design, make, and apply skills and technologies is crucial. These skills are not only practical but also empower our students to be creative thinkers and problem solvers—essential qualities for their future success.
We invite you to take a moment to appreciate the effort and enthusiasm your child has put into this project. The hands-on approach not only makes learning enjoyable but also equips them with skills that will serve them well in the future.
Thank you for your continued support throughout the first term. Happy Holidays to you and your family and we'll see you next year!

Hello Families!
The fun and hard work continues to thrive in our classroom as we tackle lots of new learning opportunities and great discussions in buddies, math and during language arts. One good discussion in math this week was - what happens when we divide by zero?
Dividing by zero is a mathematical operation that doesn't have a well-defined result. In simple terms, it's like trying to share something equally among zero people. Let's use a real-life analogy: Imagine you have 10 cookies, and you want to divide them equally among your friends. If you have zero friends (divide by zero), it doesn't make sense to distribute the cookies because there's no one to receive them. Similarly, in mathematics, when you try to divide a number by zero, there's no meaningful answer because you're essentially trying to distribute or share something among zero entities. In formal mathematics, dividing by zero is considered undefined because it leads to contradictions and doesn't fit into the rules of arithmetic. It's an operation that mathematicians avoid and cannot assign a meaningful value to.
Other highlights to ask your child about are: STEM lego challenges, our fungi identification in the parks, the gingerbread house, the writing challenge (about the holidays), and much more.
Have a great weekend,
>>>> Mr. O'Connor
PS: We even have a new student visiting from the North Pole for the next few weeks! See the picture below!

Next week we'll begin our look into addition and subtraction of large numbers.
Last week's Remembrance Day assembly was a poignant event, featuring impactful speeches by Max and Nolan that resonated with the gravity of the occasion. Attending were many guests including members from the Navy, and a powerful drumming song by Rob Morris & Robert Louis. As part of our commitment to cultural inclusivity, students practiced and filmed the brand-new counting song, 'Máhsi ts'enįwę' by Leela Gilday. This song, commissioned as the Indigenous language song for 2023 in Dene Kede, marks a significant collaboration with the CBC Library Partnerships Program. We are proud to engage your children in such enriching and diverse educational experiences. Well done Div. 17! You're getting some great things done and learning many independent skills along the way.
Have a great weekend, and enjoy the pictures below.

Hello Division 17!
It's the day before Hallowe'en and we have so many exciting things to share with you! First off, the trip to Veterans Memorial Lodge was a hit! It was great to see the excitement and joy from the residents as our class read spooky stories to them. During our recent field trip, Grade 4/5 students learned the importance of caring for and connecting with the elderly in our community. They gained empathy by interacting with the seniors and sharing their Halloween spirit. This experience taught them valuable lessons in compassion and community involvement, which will stay with them as they grow.
Last week at school, we had an exciting lineup of activities and lessons for your children. We introduced them to the fundamentals of rugby, focusing on teamwork and sportsmanship. Additionally, we covered essential cycling safety tips to ensure they are well-prepared for safe rides. For a touch of creativity, the kids engaged in spooky house writing, which brought out their imaginative storytelling skills. In math, we played engaging place value games to reinforce their understanding of numbers. They are learning many things including how to read and write big numbers and use expanded notation. To celebrate the season, students from throughout our school created literacy pumpkins outside of school as a fun and educational bonus craft. Of course, outdoor activities including trail walk and time in our Beyond the Fence areas were a part of our routine, providing opportunities for exercise and fresh air. It was a week filled with learning and fun, and we look forward to more exciting weeks ahead.

Hello, parents and guardians of our fantastic class,
We have some neat news to share with you about all the exciting things happening in our classroom!
🔢 Math Marvels: Our students have been diving into the world of numbers and mastering place value. They're now experts at writing and reading large numbers, which is no small feat!
🎨 Creative Collaborations: Our little buddies program has been a huge hit. Our class paired up with younger students to draw and create fall scarecrows. The teamwork and creativity on display are nothing short of amazing. It's been a heartwarming experience for both the older and younger students.
📝 Writing Wizards: In our language arts class, we've been focusing on writing spooky haunted house stories. Our young authors are using vivid descriptions and supporting details to make their star ideas shine. These stories are bound to give you goosebumps!
🔬 Science Spectacular: We recently had a fantastic presentation from Science World's On The Road program. The live demonstrations and activities were high-energy and ignited our students' curiosity about science. We believe this will inspire some future science and technology leaders in our class.
🎤 Singing Extravaganza: The Canadian Music Class Challenge is an annual music competition for Canadian schools, where students choose a Canadian song, put their unique twist on it, and submit their performance. It's a way to promote music education, celebrate students' musical talents, and encourage creativity. Prizes and recognition are awarded to top performers, and there may be both expert judging and public voting. The challenge is a fun and educational initiative, bringing together the power of music and community in Canadian classrooms.
We are immensely proud of the hard work, creativity, and enthusiasm our students bring to the classroom every day. These experiences are shaping our students into well-rounded individuals. Thank you for your ongoing support and encouragement. We can't wait to see what other exciting adventures the school year has in store for us. Stay tuned for more updates from our amazing Grade 4/5 class!
Warm regards,

In the BC curriculum, there's an emphasis on the development of "Core Competencies," which include communication, critical thinking, and social responsibility. Working with a buddy can help students develop these competencies as they learn to communicate effectively, think critically, and work together in a socially responsible manner.

Hello Division 17!
A quick update for you! We have been busy working on several exciting projects, including a special focus on the Lochside Card Project. The theme we've chosen revolves around winter animals sporting cozy sweaters. Through our collaborative efforts, we've developed a collection of minimalist designs that showcase animal and artistic diversity. Among the featured animals are bears, cats, dogs, reindeer, and many more!
In our math curriculum, we're currently jumping into a variety of topics, including patterns, basic math facts, and, most recently, place value concepts. Place value is a crucial foundation for various mathematical concepts, such as regrouping, multi-digit multiplication, and more within the decimal system. It also serves as the starting point for comprehending other numerical base systems. Our current activities focused on reading numbers and writing numbers from words. These can be tricky, but we'll tackle this one day at a time and keep a positive mindset.
We are also focusing on building a strong foundation for effective writing through a structured approach.
Topic Sentences: In our lessons, we emphasize the importance of a clear and compelling topic sentence. This sentence acts as the anchor of any paragraph, setting the stage for what the paragraph will discuss.
Star Details: We encourage students to enhance their writing by incorporating 'star details' — these are the key ideas and vivid descriptions that make their writing stand out. These details bring life to their sentences and help readers visualize what they are describing.
Details: Alongside star details, we teach students to include supporting information and examples to provide depth and context to their writing. These details further strengthen their arguments or descriptions.
Conclusion Sentences: Concluding a paragraph effectively is a skill we emphasize. A well-crafted conclusion sentence ties the paragraph together and often serves as a transition to the next idea.
Additionally, we've introduced the concept of 'Triple Scoop Words' to make writing more engaging. These are exciting, descriptive words that add flavor and pizzazz to their sentences. Encouraging the use of these words not only enriches their vocabulary but also makes their writing more captivating.
Our goal is to equip students with a strong understanding of the basic writing structure while also encouraging creativity and flair in their expression. We believe that this comprehensive approach will help them become confident and effective writers.

Hello Division 17!
We hope this update finds you well! It's been an exciting and enriching week for our class!
Today, our students participated in a district wide Orange Shirt Day, a meaningful occasion dedicated to contemplating the history of Indigenous peoples in Canada. Throughout the week, we engaged in thoughtful discussions, delving into the importance of land acknowledgments and developing a deeper comprehension of why these acknowledgments bear such significance in our nation's historical narrative and reconciliation endeavors. This continued in the gym, our young learners embarked on a unique journey with the Indigenous Peoples Atlas of Canada. This giant map offers an alternative perspective on our nation's geography. Rather than traditional political borders, Canada is portrayed as divided into Indigenous language groups. This immersive experience allowed our students to appreciate the diverse cultures and histories of Indigenous communities, residential schools, reserves, and more.
In the digital realm, we've been focusing on nurturing digital citizenship skills, with a particular emphasis on copyright. Our grade 4/5 students are developing the knowledge and awareness needed to navigate the digital landscape responsibly. They're learning the importance of respecting intellectual property rights and understanding how to properly cite sources in their work. Ask them about their music video(s) that they made online!
Mathematics remains a vibrant part of our curriculum, and this week, our students have been engaged in math games and exploring patterns. Not only are they sharpening their mathematical abilities, but they're also discovering the joy in problem-solving and recognizing patterns in the world around them.
Wow! Artistic expression is flourishing too as our young artists have been busy creating self-portraits that reflect their personal identity. They've been honing their skills in various art mediums, including painting, oil pastels, drawing, and collaging. These artistic pursuits provide them with a unique avenue for self-expression and creativity.
Finally, our students have had the opportunity to enjoy outdoor play in the picturesque Lochside forest, fostering a connection with nature and building bonds with their little buddies. These outdoor experiences promote physical activity, teamwork, and an appreciation for the natural world. As always, we emphasize the values of cooperation and patience in the learning process. These skills are essential not only for academic success but also for building strong relationships and nurturing a positive learning environment.
We look forward to more exciting adventures and learning experiences in the weeks to come.
Best Regards,
>>>> Mr. O'Connor
PS: Be sure to see the video (above) and photos (below) with your child! Their art is in the hallway - come in and see it in person together!

Hello Division 17!
I wanted to take a moment to celebrate the incredible journey we've embarked on together as a class. Over the past couple of weeks, I've had the privilege of working closely with the students and discovering more about their unique interests and learning preferences. Our classroom is a diverse tapestry, filled with speed skaters, soccer enthusiasts, and hockey aficionados. We have dedicated gamers, passionate math enthusiasts, and talented artists who could give Monet a run for his money. It's safe to say that we are a remarkable group, and I'm continually gaining deeper insights into each of you with every passing day.
Lately, we've been engaged in a series of captivating learning experiences, ranging from discussions on family and school values to rigorous math assessments and the creation of self-portraits. Our self-portraits are not just artistic endeavors; they also serve as reflections of our individual personalities, incorporating unique colors and facial expressions. These portraits have truly breathed life and character into our classroom. Bravo, wonderful students!
Our indoor and outdoor physical education classes have certainly left us feeling a bit tired, but they've also played a crucial role in helping us become healthier and more energetic. We've been focusing on mastering new running and soccer skills, and I must say, the progress has been impressive.
Additionally, we recently took an important step towards enhancing our digital literacy. With the guidance of Mrs. Malloy, we successfully set up secure passwords and accounts for our library computers. This means that, in due time, you'll be able to access your Google Classroom from the comfort of your own homes with just a simple login. For those of you who need a refresher on the login process, I've created a helpful resource page called "Tech Help."
I know that the pace of our journey may have seemed brisk at times, but they say that time flies when you're having fun, and that's precisely what we're doing. I encourage you to take some time this weekend to think about all the things I did and didn't mention—it's a great way to reflect on the wonderful progress we've made.
Wishing you all a restful weekend.

PS: Be sure to ask your child about the photos and videos below!
In this project, we're trying to create a mixed media self portrait project. They will illustrate not only their physical appearance but create drawings, photos and words to collage and communicate who they are on the inside as well. They have done an excellent job so far as we've learned how to mix their own unique and beautiful skin tone using acrylic paints. See video we watched to learn about how mix the colour of our skin!

Wow! We completed our first FULL week of school and it was a blast! I've enjoyed getting to know the class and their individual interests and learning styles.
Studying Terry Fox has been an inspirational journey for many of our students. His determination and spirit in the face of adversity serve as a beacon of hope for all of us as evident in the amazing run we had today! Terry's Marathon of Hope not only showcased his incredible physical endurance but also highlighted his empathy and selflessness. The students in our class enjoyed learning about his Métis ancestry which adds another layer to his remarkable story, emphasizing the rich tapestry of his identity and the diversity of the human experience. Terry Fox's legacy transcends the boundaries of time and culture, reminding us that with sheer determination, a compassionate heart, and a relentless pursuit of our dreams, we too can make an enduring impact on the world, leaving a legacy of inspiration for generations to come.
Wishing you a great weekend,
