Reading and Writing:
Mystery books are wrapping up! I've been so impressed by the students who are taking responsibility to read and catch up on their mystery books. Their detective logs and story mountain have been capturing the important pieces of their mysteries.
Our goal this week is to finish up writing our own mystery stories. Most students are introducing their mystery and writing about the events that lead up to the turning point of the story.
Spelling and Morphology Focus:
/k/ sound can be spelling using the letter c if it is followed by the letters a, o, u, or a consonant. The letter k is used if it is followed by the letters e, i, or y. "K takes i and e, C takes the other 3 and all the rest!"
The root <phon> means sound.
Examples: There are three phonemes in the word cat. A symphony is a long, complex song played by many instruments. Telephones are devices uses to carry sound across a distance.
This week in math, we are wrapping up our learning on fractions and beginning our new unit on division. We will start by reviewing fact families and exploring how multiplication and division are connected. Building a strong understanding of these relationships will help students develop confidence with division strategies in the coming weeks.

We have wrapped up our government unit and will be exploring the Big Idea: British Columbia followed a unique path in becoming a part of Canada next.
This week we will be finishing some research on important people in BCs history. Next we are writing an interview with a partner to highlight who the historical person was involved with the gold rush and how they contributed to the development of BC. We will perform our interviews for the class next week.
In science, students continue to work on their “Earth and Space” research projects. This week, most students will be finishing their note-taking and research pages before beginning to create their slideshows. Students will also begin exploring their topics in greater detail as they continue their research.
We are applying movement skills, cooperation, and communication designing a fair, safe, and fun game - then teach it to our peers in class. We have had fun learning games from 4 groups so far. We'll have another 3 groups teach their games this week.
New projects coming soon!
As part of our social and emotional learning goals this year, Mrs. Bales and Ms. Watson will be introducing students to some new strategies to help them manage everyday worries and anxiety. The strategies come from a collection of resources called EASE (Everyday Anxiety Strategies for Educators). Some of the skills students will learn include:
• How to recognize their own feelings
• How to calm their bodies so they can relax and focus
• How to take care of their mental well-being using a basic self-care plan that they will design themselves
The activities are designed for all students to learn strategies that will benefit them now and in the future. The lessons are practical and engaging and easy to include in our classroom routines.
If you are interested in learning more about EASE, here is a link to Healthy Minds BC and the EASE at Home website.
