Spencer’s Athlete Expectations
Student Athletes are on display: they are judged as typical students from that school. Behaviour must be exemplary and teammates, coaches, opponents, event organizers and spectators must be respected. You are representing yourself, your family, and your school; your conduct and sportsmanship should always reflect on you and the school in the best possible way.
Participation in school sport is a privilege, not a student right; it’s a privilege to represent one’s school and community. Physical education classes provide the right to exercise and instruction in various sports. As such, athletes should be prepared to commit for the duration of the season.
Respect for Coaches – coaches are volunteering their own time. 100% respect and cooperation is expected so skills and knowledge of the game can be learned and/or improved. No one know it all.
Respect for Referees – decisions by a referee in any game must be respected without gesture or argument. Some calls are always missed in any sport, at any level. Calls missed benefit you as well.
Respect for other Players – Treat opponents with respect. Show sportsmanship, not trash talk. (Professional sports are a poor model – they’re meant to draw as many television views and spectators to witness a heroic battle of the titans).
Appreciation of Volunteers – without these volunteers we wouldn’t be able to make our athletics programs happen. Please remember to say thank-you!
Game play – Athletes will play to the best of their ability and should exercise sportsmanship and self-control at all times. Be generous in winning and graceful in losing; win with humility, lose with dignity. Refrain from the use of foul language and the use of physical force outside of the rules and the game. Play hard, but within rules as all times.
Spectators Expectations:
Spectators are encouraged and welcomed to attend school sporting activities. Spectators will be expected to behave in a positive, courteous manner as guests of the host school. Spectators should:
Respect: cheer in a positive manner for all competitors, respect the decisions of the officials, do not interfere with the play or competition, be courteous and respectful to other spectators, all competitors, coaches, event organizers and officials.
Exercise Self-Control always: respect the rules and regulations of the facility, refrain from the use of foul language, intimidation and the use of physical force of any kind. Be an example to the athletes and students.
Concerns should first be brought to the attention of coach, then the Athletic Director if needed.
