Noun Town is a gamified language-learning platform developed by SUPER HYPER MEGA. First promoted as a Kickstarter in 2021 and then released on Meta and Steam Early Access in 2022 and 2023 respectively. Noun Town has continued to develop features over time and has recently released its 1.0 version in May 2026. It teaches beginner vocabulary and phrases through an interactive game world where learners explore, complete mini-games, hear native-speaker audio, practise pronunciation, and restore colour to the town as they progress.
For this EVA, Noun Town is best understood as a supplemental immersive language-learning tool rather than a full language curriculum. Its strongest use case is beginner vocabulary acquisition, review, pronunciation attempts, and learner motivation.
Noun Town is available through several access pathways. The desktop version can be used on Windows and Mac computers, while the VR version can be used with Meta Quest and SteamVR-compatible headsets. Noun Town also offers an education pathway for schools and institutions.
This is important because Noun Town is not simply a web-based classroom tool that teachers can easily access and use. Schools may need to consider platform access, account management, device availability, IT approval, and whether students will use the desktop version, VR version, or both.
Individual licenses for both the standard and VR versions cost around $25.00 through the Steam and Meta Quest ecosystems.
Education plans cost about $1.00 per student per month and come with their own stand-alone program outside of the Steam and Meta ecosystems.
Cross-progression is supported meaning that students can freely progress across both versions.
Noun Town sits at the intersection of several active edtech areas: language learning, educational games, VR and mixed reality, speech recognition, and spaced practice. Its venture potential comes from offering something more immersive than flashcards or standard language apps while remaining more accessible than VR-only platforms because it also supports desktop use.
The key EVA question is whether this immersive approach creates enough learning value to justify school adoption, teacher training, and implementation costs.
