Earthquake

Report done by news director news. Aka JT Houston.

BREAKING NEWS:

Just on the 6th, a massive earthquake rocked more than 10 provinces in Turkey and Syria, killing more than 50,000 civilians during the earthquake. With the death toll rising as the cold takes the homeless and injured, refugees are taking all the help they can get. One of the many survivors described the earthquake as, “It felt like some giant came and stomped on them.” Many countries around the world are giving as much support and resources as they can. While the injured are being treated, the dead are being buried wherever there's space. Mass graves are everywhere, with grave markers that bare their names, items of clothes or jewelry, or if can't be recognized, just a marker with a number. The earthquake was a magnitude of 7.5, which is 5x the amount of the earthquake that hit Thailand, in our class book, Wave. THE NEW ROOM

BY J.T. and Ewen

Have you seen the new room that they are building? Rumors say that they are building a “sensory room” with a climbing wall built into it. It is located on the right side of the building near the band room.

Our sources told us that it will be a quiet room meant for kids that have trouble controlling their emotions.  Even though it's supposed to be a quiet room, it's causing a lot of noise during class time.

Even though the room looks big on the outside, it's actually fairly small on the inside, especially with the climbing wall.  Currently, it's only in the early stages of the build. It will probably be finished by the time we get back from spring break (early April to June).

Aside from the new room, here are some MUST-KNOW calendar dates and activities we are doing this year.

- January 23, professional development day ( pro-D-day)

January flyers are out and ready for purchases.

Proficiency Scale

Proficiency Scale reporting has been in use in various districts all around the province. Some Districts, like Sooke, have been using it for over 5 years.  Though this reporting is new to us in SD61 it is something that has been developing for a number of years. This new process of assessment is more authentic to learning, reflecting, goal setting and improving skills. The school district has ongoing information for parents, students and teachers as we all learn how to navigate this new to us system. Please check out the school district page and some of the images below to start to familiarize yourself with the Proficiency Scale system.

The Flipside Youth Centre at Peakes:

Open on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays from 3:00-5:00 and can accommodate up to 20 students visiting the centre after school.

There are also great opportunities for fun events like the Firday Night Pizza, Skate and a Movie. Find more information or register here.

Follow Colquitz!

Reminder: Students are to pack in and pack out all garbage. We have no garbages in classrooms. Lunches can be packed in reusable containers or students can bring garbage home to recycle/toss.

Growth Mindset

In our classroom we are focusing the journey of learning rather than the destination.

This means having a Growth Mindset. If you haven't heard this term before it is a way of thinking that enables people to challenge themselves leading to improved learning, kindness towards others, higher frustration tolerances when meeting a hard task, and the ability to learn from mistakes.

Growth Mindset is a way of thinking that can be hard to achieve if the person has been practicing a Fixed Mindset for a while. It is something that I as a teacher can model and teach, it is also something you as a parent can foster.

Below is a video that can be helpful in understanding the power of Growth Mindset and changing how we encourage children so that they can develop a Growth Mindset.

The Struggle is Real...ly Important
