A Chromebook is a laptop style computer that does not run a traditional operating system like Windows or MacOS (so there are no installed programs like Word, Excel, Photoshop, etc).
Instead, Chromebooks use a Chrome Operating System which means they are designed to simply connect to the internet and use web-based apps like Google Drive, Docs, Slides, Draw, Sheets etc. What makes this so great is that they are really fast and really easy to use with a GSuite account.
The school now has 12 Chromebook carts (with 14 Chromebooks in each) that you can sign out to use in your classroom. The carts are located in the following rooms: 105, 122, 202, 207A, 218, and A5.
To check the availability of any of the Chromebook Carts and to sign one out:
Go to www.mountdoug.sd61.bc.ca
Go to Library and Resources
Select Chromebook Carts
On the left side of the page you will see all the Chromebook Carts listed by location. Click on each to check the calendar for availability
You can toggle between week, month, and agenda views
Fill out the form with your available date/time
You will receive a booking confirmation by email and the calendar will be updated as soon as possible
To use a school Chromebook you/your students must log in with a GSuite (@sd61learn.ca) account and password
Settings, bookmarks, themes, apps (Drive, Docs, Slides, etc) and extensions will travel with you and your account so it doesn't matter which Chromebook you use.
You can also sign in as a GUEST - no password required. This option allows for web browsing only.
Make sure to Sign Out when finished using the device.
You can also sign off by powering down.
For the most part using a Chromebook is just like using a regular laptop computer however there are some things that are a bit different.
To the right is a slideshow reviewing some of these.
I recommend going through it before you use the computers for the first time.
Feel free to share with your students as well.
