Simply put, Read&Write for Chrome provides support tools for students that help with reading, writing, studying and research. It is super user-friendly, and works with webpages along with other common file types stored in Google Drive (Google Docs, Google Slides, PDF, ePub, Kes) to:
Read aloud words, passages, and whole documents
Colour Highlight text
Show the meaning of words as a definition or in pictures
Translate and speak text into other languages
Turn words into text as you speak
Simplify and Summarize text on web pages.
Read&Write is a Chrome Extension (for more info on extensions click here) and is attached to every GAFE account for School District 61. This means that students can have access to it on any PC, Mac, or tablet with Google Chrome installed. To access Read&Write students simply log into Chrome using their @sd61learn.ca GAFE account. See below for more details on this process.
In the sections below I have included:
Getting Started with Read&Write and a Quick Look at the Toolbar
A Reference Guide for Read&Write Tools
please note that there are different options depending on what type of document you are viewing. For example, the toolbar for using Read&Write with a webpage looks different than when using it with a PDF
Tutorial Videos - A playlist containing 23 videos covering a wide range of Read&Write topics
To begin using Read&Write, students may need to add the extension to Chrome through the Chrome Web Store.
Use the provided link and click on the 'Add to Chrome' button
This will install the Read&Write for Google Chrome™ extension to be used in Google Docs and the web, and the Read&Write for Google Chrome™ app to be used with ePubs, PDFs and Kes files.
The extension and app will then request to have access to their account.
There will be two authorization screens.
Students MUST allow access to both in order to use.
There are 23 videos in this playlist on Read&Write.
To view the topics covered click on the list icon in the top left of the video window.
