MET Summer Institute 2022
My name is Tegan Soros, I am a Secondary Science Educator who lives in Victoria BC. I work, live, and play on the traditional territory of the Coast and Straits Salish Peoples. I recognize the Lekwungen speaking peoples of the Songhees and Esquimalt Nations, and their historic connections to these lands and acknowledge the unknown peoples who have lived on this land since time immemorial
This ePortfolio has been designed as a curation site for my learning experiences in UBC's Masters of Education Summer Institute, Makerspaces & Inclusive Education. Feel free to get to know a little bit more about the "Maker-In-Me" below, and enjoy exploring all the website has to offer. Happy learning!

Champion each day of the MET Summer Institute with the Maker Mentality. Setting this goal is important because it will allow me to hold myself accountable on practicing the Maker Mindset to gain the most out of this experience. This goal will be met by actively taking part in each day’s activities, actively listening to guest speakers, probing my instructors, and collaborating with my peers to make, test, iterate and embrace failure positivity. I will be able to assess if this goal is being met through reflecting informally with peers and formally in my Portfolio each day.
Embrace committing to action of decolonizing science education in our Unit of Learning. Setting this goal is important in the process of decolonizing not only science education but voice and community that has been lost in the colonization process - it embraces principles of EDIDA which should guide all teaching and student learning. This goal will be met by conducting research and having conversations about what it means to take steps towards decolonizing Western science in the BC Science curriculum and apply those principles through our lessons - ensuring Indigenous Principles are at the forefront of each lesson we design for our unit. We will assess our work throughout the design process and gather feedback from peers after our Unit Presentations.
Creating an inclusive makerspace in my classroom this September which will continue to develop to meet the needs of a space that embraces EDIDA frameworks. This goal is important to ensure I commit to action in creating inclusive spaces in my school where the maker mentality and student individuality can thrive. I will do this by thoughtfully considered materials, content, tools and the physical place to be inclusive of all students that choose to enter and/or use it. The space will be available during school FOCUS blocks - leaving the door open to embody making space for all. I will actively gather informal feedback (through observation and discussion) formal feedback (through surveys) and bring in community to collaborate, grow, and develop the makerspace alongside the needs of it's users.
