Academic Integrity

Google Scholar is a Google platform search browser that focuses on scholarly, peer review literature and sources. 

Google Scholar is beneficial in an ELA classroom by directing students toward reliable sources and away from questionable content. 

Additional benefits of Google Scholar:

• Cites its articles in a variety of frequently preferred formats meaning less leg work for users.

• Allows users to save articles for future or continued use so as not to lose track of sources.

• Provides equitable access by not requiring a subscription lessening the digital divide.

Academic Integrity:

Google Scholar promotes academic integrity by encouraging the use of academic scholarly sources and the citation of sources. Instructors must be transparent that this isn't a fool-proof technology and source evaluation and literacy skills should still be practiced. 

Draftback is a Google Docs extension that tracks and records keystrokes within the document for future replay. 

Draftback is beneficial in an ELA classroom by providing instructors a glimpse into their students writing skills and development without having to hover or make a stud-net feel self conscious. 

Additional benefits of Draftback:

• Provides insight into the student's writing style and work habits so the instructor may better understand the student's writing process. 

• Allows the instructor to check for excessive use of copy and paste acting as an originality checker.

• Acts as a deterrent for the student to avoid excessive use of copy and paste into the student's writing. 

Academic Integrity:

Draftback can influence academic integrity by holding students accountable. However, it does not prevent work arounds, and therefor isn't to be used solely for that purpose. Instructors should continue to highlight and model academic integrity and encourage students to create original work. This means making assessments meaningful and engaging (Trust, 2023).
