KALISPELL, MT — Glacier High School has named longtime assistant coach Gary Evans as the new head coach of the Wolfpack softball program. Evans takes the helm following the departure of Abby Snipes, the 2023 and 2025 Montana AA Coach of the Year, who was recently appointed as Glacier’s next Activities Director. Snipes replaces Mark Dennehy, who retired at the end of the school year.
Evans has been a cornerstone of the Wolfpack program for more than a decade, serving primarily as pitching coach. Under his guidance, standout athletes such as Ali Williams and Ella Farrell earned Gatorade Player of the Year honors. He has coached alongside Snipes as well as former head coach Andy Fors, contributing to one of the most successful runs in program history. Evans will only be the fourth head coach in Glacier’s history (Joel Bemis 2008-12, Andy Fors 2012-17, Abby Snipes 2017-25).
Glacier has captured the Montana AA State Championship in 2015, 2023, and 2025, finished runner-up in 2016 and 2024, took home a third-place trophy in 2014, and has a rich tradition in Montana AA Softball. Evans was an integral part of the coaching staff for all three state championship teams. Evans will be joined on staff by returning longtime assistants Greg Adkins, Hannah Atlee, and Brad Nikunen.
A 1982 graduate of Havre High School, Evans earned his degree in Business Administration from Montana State–Northern. He spent 25 years managing Kalispell’s Herberger’s and currently serves as Director of Human Resources at the Iron Horse Golf Club. He has coached at both Flathead and Glacier High Schools — with two daughters playing for the Bravettes and one for the Wolfpack — but since 2013 has been firmly “running with the Pack.”
According to Abby Snipes, the Glacier High Activities Director, “Gary Evans is an excellent softball coach and an even more incredible human being. He knows more about softball and has contributed so much to the Montana fastpitch softball community. Gary is revered as an expert pitching coach around the state and is frequently consulted by his high school and college-level coaching colleagues. He will continue to push our program to new heights of success.”
Evans is also a 2023 inductee into the USA Softball Montana Hall of Fame, recognized as one of the most accomplished pitchers in Montana men’s fastpitch history. Over a career spanning five decades, he amassed double-digit state championships, multiple regional titles, and an appearance in the NAFA national tournament in 2017. He earned numerous All-American honors and was widely regarded as the premier pitcher in the state from the mid-1980s through his retirement in 2021.
“No pitcher in Montana has more wins, no-hitters, or championships during that time,” noted the Hall of Fame citation. “Gary left it all on the field, and his accomplishments speak for themselves.”
Evans’ combination of competitive excellence, deep knowledge of the game, and strong relationships with athletes is expected to continue Glacier’s tradition of success.
