Music 8

Part of a broader multi-week quater-year Performing Arts rotation exploring various creative disciplines, this course provides a foundational introduction to music through hands-on instrument exploration, primarily focusing on ukulele and guitar with options to explore bass, drums, keys, and more. Students experience an introductory week of singing in mic-driven ensembles, learn the basics of digital audio workstation (DAW) use and music production via BandLab, and study core rhythm theory and major scales, with advanced topics introduced as time and skill permit. (Note: This course is a compulsory component of the regular grade-level rotation; French Immersion students follow an alternate scheduling path and do not take this specific rotation.)

Contemporary Music 9 - 12

Combined with Music Production 9–12. Designed for students selecting this elective in grades 9 through 12. (Note for French Immersion students: Due to program scheduling, elective selection for this course opens starting in Grade 10). Ideal for either beginner instrumentalists seeking a guided space to practice and play, or experienced musicians desiring complete autonomy over their repertoire. Primary instruments of focus and readily accessible include guitar, bass, keyboard/piano, and drums, though other instruments may be accommodated, students are always encouraged to reach out regarding their specific musical interests. This course features in-class performances and/or recordings only, removing the pressure of public shows in favor of individual musical progression. Requires a high degree of student independence.

Music Production 9 - 12

Combined with Contemporary Music 9–12. Designed for students selecting this elective in grades 9 through 12. (Note for French Immersion students: Due to program scheduling, elective selection for this course opens starting in Grade 10). Tailored for students interested in recording, mixing, and sound engineering, regardless of prior experience. The course introduces foundational production techniques and theory before shifting to largely independent study, empowering students to drive their own recording and mixing projects of personal interest.

Instrumental Music 9-12

Combined with Vocal Music 9–12. Designed for students selecting this elective in grades 9 through 12. (Note for French Immersion students: Due to program scheduling, elective selection for this course opens starting in Grade 10). This performance-focused course centers on playing a mix of accompaniment for large ensemble pieces as well as student-led small groups. Some prior experience on an instrument is required, but students are encouraged to connect with the instructor regarding their current skill level to ensure a strong fit. Coursework is geared toward preparing for live public performances throughout the semester.

Vocal Music 9-12

Combined with Instrumental Music 9–12. Designed for students selecting this elective in grades 9 through 12. (Note for French Immersion students: Due to program scheduling, elective selection opens starting in Grade 10). Rather than a traditional large-scale mass choir, this course focuses on contemporary vocal performance using microphones, close-knit harmonies, and smaller group configurations, alongside larger blended arrangements. The curriculum emphasizes microphone technique, vocal blending, and preparing for live public performances throughout the semester.

Weekly Afterschool Access & Rehearsals (RM 105)

Mondays - Grade 8 Open Music Lab

Reserved exclusively for Grade 8 students to explore music of their own choosing, with a primary focus on guitar, bass, drums, piano, and voice. Operating in a drop-in style until 5:00 PM, this session provides an accessible space for students to jam and practice freely. Guidance is available on an as-requested basis to help beginners learn the basics or assist students in discovering what they want to work on.

Tuesdays: 9-12 Instrumental Practice

Dedicated primarily to students enrolled in the senior instrumental class to work on in-class pieces or personal musical projects. While other students are welcome to drop in and utilize the space, priority is given to senior instrumental students. Operating in a flexible format until 5:00 PM, targeted guidance and support are provided to help musicians refine their technical proficiency.

Wednesdays: 9-12 Vocals

Dedicated primarily to students in the vocal class for focused group work and a cappella arrangement in the main room. While other students are welcome to participate, priority is given to vocal class members. Operating in a collaborative format until 5:00 PM, vocalists can harmonize and rehearse, with the alternative option to utilize the adjoining recording studios for tracking and production projects.

Thursdays/Fridays: 8-12 Theatre Company

Reserved entirely for the theatre company to run auditions, staging rehearsals, and cast practice. Operating across both afternoons/evenings, this dedicated time and space allows performers and directors to run scenes, block choreography, and prepare all necessary elements for upcoming dramatic and musical productions.
