SD48 Pathways to Learning - Refresh

In the fall of 2012, the School District No.48 Board of Education launched a large scale public input process to inform a new strategic plan and education plan to enhance student learning. The Board asked the public questions in four phases:

1. What is the most significant thing the Board should focus on to improve the quality of student learning in the district over the next three years?

2. What are some of the key challenges our young people will face as adult citizens? What are some of the new and unique opportunities our students will have in the future? What key skills or competencies does a successful learner need to develop?

3. What evidence would convince you whether our students have these skills?

4. What actions do we need to take to make this happen?

We collected thousands of responses through the four phases from parents, students, educators, support staff, First Nations, and other community members. Forty-five representatives from these groups, along with trustees and administrators, came together to review and analyze the responses. The result was the writing of an education plan called, Pathways to Learning.

Since 2012, Pathways to Learning has transformed how we design for student learning. It describes the competencies that our students will need to be successful, our overall goal leading to this competency development, and it provides instructional design principles that support student competency development. Since Pathways to Learning was adopted by our Board of Education, our Secondary Completion Rates have risen to be among the highest in the province for all learners. Still, there is much work to do, to deepen and broaden our students knowledge, skills, and competencies so that all students can be better prepared for their future.
