Science with Ms. Cho

SQE Loves Home Science!

In this video Ms.Cho teaches us about acids and bases.

You can do this at home but be safe and make sure you always have an adult to help you!

Experiment 1:

If you want to try this at home you will need:

  • Purple cabbage cut up

  • Pot of boiling water

  • clear cups or glasses

  • House hold liquids such as juice, vinegar, soap, baking soda mixed with water.

Step 1: Boil your cut up purple cabbage until the water turns a dark purple colour.

Step 2: Let the water cool and while that is happening you can gather the rest of your supplies. You will need 1 cup or glass jar for each liquid you plan to test.

Step 3: Pour a little bit of each liquid into a cup and then add the purple cabbage water. The water will change colour just like magic!

Step 4: Understand the science. It's not magic, the water changes colour depending on if the liquid is a acid or a base. Liquids that turn warm colours like pink and red are considered an acid and things that turn cool colours like blue are considered a base. If the liquid turns green that will indicate that it is neutral

Experiment 2:

In the second half of this video Ms. Cho teaches us about what really happens when you mix together vinegar and baking soda. She explains that when vinegar and baking soda mix they are making carbon dioxide gas.

The gas that is produced can be used to blow up a balloon and put out a birthday candle! So cool! You can try it at home with the help of an adult!

Here's how to do it:

Gather the materials you will need:

  • Vinegar

  • Baking soda

  • water bottle

  • balloon

  • candle

  • lighter

Step 1: Test to make sure you can easily put the balloon over the mouth of your water bottle. Does it fit? Good! now take it off and set it aside.

Step 2: carefully mix together your vinegar and baking soda solution inside the water bottle, try not to let it overflow.

Step 3: As fast as you can (an adult) place the balloon over the mouth of water bottle and watch the balloon fill up with gas.

Step 4: Carefully take the balloon off the water bottle being very careful not to let any of the gas escape!

Step 5: Have an adult light the candle.

Step 6: let the gas out of the balloon near the candle and watch it go out!
