PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Note: several courses are offered under the “Fitness and Conditioning” banner (e.g. Basketball, Cross Training, and Cycling). Students can only receive credit for one Fitness and Conditioning course in Grade 11 and one Fitness and Conditioning Course in Grade 12.

 

ACTIVE LIVING 11 AND 12 (MACLV11 and MACLV12)

The Active Living 11 and 12 curriculum concentrates on promoting healthy attitudes and regular physical activity as important components in each student's lifestyle. The course places great emphasis on achieving and maintaining personal fitness and developing effective leadership and sports management skills. The program strives to provide opportunities for participants to experience a variety of individual life-long pursuits such as Frisbee-golf, golf, hiking or rock climbing. Necessary components of Active Living 11 or 12 include:

·        Implementation and completion of a fitness program

·        Complete a minimum of 10 community service hours

·        Complete a leadership presentation

·        Successful attendance and participation

FITNESS AND CONDITIONING 11 AND 12 – BASKETBALL (MFTCD11-BB and MFTCD12-BB)

This course is open to grade 10-12 students and involves physical training for basketball, skill development, team development, coaching & refereeing. Students will dive deeper into the strategies and systems for basketball, and how to train their bodies to be the best player they can be. This class will include fitness & conditioning, run days, drills, games play, and some classroom days geared towards the sport.

FITNESS AND CONDITIONING 11 AND 12 – CROSS TRAINING (MFTCD11 and MFTCD12)

This program is for students motivated to pursue personal fitness goals and learn more about personal training, fitness and conditioning.  A variety of group workouts will be led by the teacher to keep you motivated and interested. However, after students learn about training principles, they will create a personalized training program. Weekly individual workout days will allow each student to train for their personal fitness goal with the support of the teacher. Occasional sports game days will be planned as well to provide variety to training. You will learn about fundamental training concepts, safe and effective techniques for important exercises (squat, deadlift, bench press), nutrition & recovery and other health concepts so that you can take care of yourself and reach your fitness goals.


FITNESS AND CONDITIONING: VOLLEYBALL 11AND 12 (MFTCD11-VB AND MFTCD12-VB)

This course is open to grade 10-12 students and involves physical training for volleyball, skill development, team development, coaching & refereeing. Students will dive deeper into the strategies and systems for volleyball, and how to train their bodies to be the best volleyball player they can be. This class will include fitness & conditioning, run days, drills, games play, and some classroom days geared towards the sport.

FITNESS AND CONDITIONING: CYCLING 11+12 (MFTCD11-CA AND MFTCD12-CA)

This course provides cyclists of all abilities the opportunity to earn high school credits while developing skills, exploring career opportunities, and building character in Canada’s mountain bike capital. This year-long course includes a comprehensive cycling skills program, cross and sport-specific training, exercise physiology and metabolism, personal growth and leadership. Students will begin the year with cross training, sport-specific training, goal setting and risk management and will cycle outdoors throughout the year as the weather allows. This program is available for students in Grades 10 through 12 and is suitable for riders of all abilities. There is no course fee (runs outside the timetable).

OUTDOOR EDUCATION 11 AND 12 (MODED11 and MODED12 plus MFTCD11 and MFTCD12) 

The Outdoor Education Program is an opportunity for students to explore the outdoors, experience new adventures, learn new skills, and discover their individual strengths. Students will take an outdoor education course during the regular timetable. Students will also receive credit for the Fitness and Conditioning: Outdoor Education PE 11 and 12 course for their time spent outdoors throughout the school year. Activities may include, but are not limited to hiking, canoeing, sea-kayaking, Nordic skiing, snowshoeing, surfing, and rock-climbing. Students will, in general, participate in five multi-day trips ranging from three to five days, as well as numerous single-day outings.


Students need to be strong independent learners, well-organized, and self-motivated to handle the formal component of the course, and keen outdoor enthusiasts and problem solvers to enjoy the various outdoor adventures. No outdoor experience is necessary. A course fee of $1250 covers professional instructors, camping fees, equipment repair and maintenance, and specialty gear rental. Students must fill out the application form on the HSS website to be considered for the program. To keep the cost of this program low, there is a significant amount of fundraising required by students and families.
