Meet Recaps

March 9, 2018 - Batavia Distance Madness

March 3, 2018 - Batavia Pete Heimsath Invitational

Oswego East finished fourth in a highly competitive meet at the Pete Heimsath Invitational.  The Wolves scored 97.5 points to finish behind Lake Park, Glenbard East and meet champion Batavia.  Only 18 points separated the top four teams. East used their depth to earn 13 Top-4 finishes in 11 different events in this single-level meet.

Athlete of the Meet Spotlight

Two high jumpers shared Athlete of the Meet honors.  Senior Haley Bruns cleared an all-time PR of 5’0 while freshman Kayla Bonczkowski cleared a PR of 4’10.  OE jumpers finished 3rd and 4th on the day.  Bruns’ PR was the result of the work she has put in during the offseason of the past two years.  She also led off the runner-up 4x400 with a 63 second split. Bonczkowski battled sickness throughout the meet and was still able to improve on her season best.

Notable Performances

Sophomore Jayna Dias had a strong day taking home 3 PRs in the 55 (7.65), 200 (27.34) and Long Jump (16’1.5).  Dias finished in the top 4 in all three events. Throwers Kareema Lawal and Anna Aubuchon combined for a 3-5 finish with season bests in shot (36’06.5 and 33’8 respectively).  Junior Meghan Stock took 2nd in the 400 with a season-best 62.55 and anchored the 4x400 to a 4:12.05 2nd place finish.  That relay, with Stock, Bruns, Abby Flammersfeld and Mya Larrieu currently sits in the top 20 in the state.

The distance crew earned four top 3 finishes in the 800, 1600 and 3200.  Flammersfeld finished 3rd in the 800 with a season best 2:28 and senior Kendra Standish ran an all-time PR of 5:24 in the mile to finish second.  Sophomore Morgan Ede and junior Katherine Sim ran a strong team race finishing 2-3 in the 3200 and were separated by only a second, 11:57 and 11:58.  The 4x800 also opened the meet with a season-best and school record 10:07 behind the efforts of Flammersfeld, Standish, Isabella Gyori and Elyssa Gall.

Final Word

Oswego East showcased its depth throughout the day against a strong field at Batavia’s indoor facility.  A series of strong individual performances were bookended by excellent relay races to open and close the meet.  The Wolves will use this momentum as they wrap up its indoor season and moves to outdoors.

February 24, 2018--Plainfield South Invitational

Oswego East travelled to Plainfield South and came home with team titles in both the Varsity and Open levels in the eight team invite.  At the Varsity level, the Wolves took home five individual and relay titles and scored top-three finishes in nine different events. At the Open level, OE matched the varsity totals with five titles as well.  Overall, Oswego East had 17 PRs throughout the day and scored points in all but one event. The well-rounded performance was enough to win the meet by three points over Joliet West.

Athlete of the Meet Spotlight

Sophomore Morgan Ede took home athlete of the meet honors earning an individual win in the 1600m (5:28) and splitting a 2:28 on her leg of the winning 4x800 relay.  Ede, who was a critical part of this fall’s state-qualifying cross country team opened the meet with her fastest 800 split of the season.  Throughout a tight, three-woman race in the 1600, Morgan overcame an early deficit by making a move to reconnect with the lead pack about half way through the race.  She took control of race in the final 300m and held on for the win in a PR time.

Notable Performances

Wins in both the 4x400 and 4x800 relays anchored a strong OE performance throughout the day.  The 4x800 relay consisted of sophomores Ede, Emma McKillip and Liliana Mendoza and junior Katherine Sim and ran 10:42 to outpace the field by sixty meters.  The 4x400 (4:24) got strong performances from sophomore Kalli Bogard, junior Meghan Stock and seniors Abby Flammersfeld and Haley Bruns.  In the field events, Bruns took 2nd in High Jump with a season-best mark of 4’10 and sophomore Jayna Dias opened her long jump season with a first place finish (15’2).  Also in Long Jump, Mackenzie Cook jumped more than five times her body length to finish second.  The Wolves went 3rd and 4th in Shot, with Kareema Lawal and Anna Aubuchon throwing 33’7 and 32’3 respectively.  Senior Katie Finin paced a strong group of Triple Jump performances by taking 2nd at 30’4.5.  On the track, the Wolves finished 1st and 3rd in the 1600m with Ede and Flammersfeld both running strong, tactical races.  Senior Kendra Standish cruised to a 3200m run victory (11:53) and helped pace Reese Aister through her first two mile race.  East also got third places finishes in the 400 and 800 from Stock (66.06) and Sim (2:35)

On the open level, OE again won the 4x400 and 4x800 relays.  The 4x800 team of freshmen Naylah Allen, Angie Goduto and Emily Salmeron teamed with newcomer Stefanie Shea to win in 11:26.  The 4x400 team of Jimena Godinez, Ella Vacek and Abby Ford joined last-minute sub Sim to win in 4:38.  The 4x200 team capped a strong relay performance by finishing 2nd in 2:00.23 (Makayla Buenafe, Rayna Harris, Kathy Harris and Godinez.  The distance crew took 1st and 2nd in the 3200 (Meghan Murphy and Madison Sniegowski) and 2nd in the 1600 (McKillip).  In the field, the Wolves went 1-2 in Triple Jump behind Abby Ftacek and Marie Krapez and Ellie Behnke won High Jump.

Final Word

Oswego East was able to build on their previous performance at Glenbard South and competed well with a field of conference teams.  Balanced scoring and depth in multiple events allowed the Wolves to win the meet and will be important moving forward.

February 17, 2018--Glenbard South Invite

The 2018 Indoor Track season got underway for Oswego East at the Glenbard South quad.  The Wolves finished second on both Varsity and JV in this open-entry meet.  The team set 37 PRs from the intersquad Time Trial the previous week. Varsity was paced by event wins in the 1600m (Abby Flammersfeld), 55 hurdles (Lily Baur), 4x800 relay, High Jump (Kayla Bonczkowski) and Shot Put (Kareema Lawal).

Athlete of the Meet Spotlight

Thrower Kareema Lawal earned athlete of the meet honors from the coaches for her event-winning, 35’3 throw.  This marked a lifetime PR for Lawal and strong start to her senior season.  The senior and returning All-Conference thrower improved by over a foot from her Time Trial throw a week ago.  Lawal looks to build on this early success throughout indoor and into outdoor season.

Notable Performances

The distance crew had a solid day, starting things off with a winning 4x800 relay (Morgan Ede, Kendra Standish, Katherine Sim and Flammersfeld) running 10:27 and winning by 10 seconds.  The Wolves went 1-3-4 in the 1600m with Flammersfeld taking 1st in 5:35, Standish 3rd in 5:42 and Ede 4th in 5:47.  Isabella Gyori also took home a second place in the 800 running a 2:37.  In the sprints, Lily Baur led the Wolves with a 55h win in 9.99 seconds and Jayna Dias finished second in the 55m dash with a time of 7.90.  OE also earned a JV win from Kolbi Cambric in the 200m in 30.81.  Meghan Stock took second in the 400m dash with a 66.72. Mackenzie Cook and Reese Aister dominated the infant division with wins in Pole Vault and the 3200m from Cook and a first place finish in Aister’s 55m debut (despite falling sound asleep mid-way through the race). Freshman Kayla Bonczkowski opened her high school career with a winning jump of 4’8 and Lawal’s Shot Put win gave the Wolves two field event titles in their season debut.

Final Word

The opening meet of the season always serves as a baseline for improvement for the Wolves.  They look to build at all levels as they head to Plainfield South next week and Batavia the week after that.
