April 21, 2017--Neuqua Valley/District 204 Invitational

Recap

Oswego East competed in the eight-team Neuqua Valley Girls Invite.  The Wolves were paced by strong distance performances in the highly competitive meet.  Varsity finished 6th of 8, while JV finished 3rd.  Event winners at the varsity level included Maya Taylor in the long jump with a jump of 16’10.5 and the 4x800 relay of Abby Flammersfeld, Kara Webb, Isabella Gyori and Alexis Henz who ran a 9:56 to win the race comfortably over Minooka.  At the JV level, long sprinter Meghan Stock ran the 100m dash for the first time and clocked a 13.20 in the JV victory.  OE had two winning relays in the 4x100 and 4x400.  The 4x1 team of Olga Koval and three freshmen, Kayla Habich, Nyla Talton and Kayla Olschanski ran 52.87 to win convincingly over Wheaton Warrenville.  The 4x400 team consisted of two juniors, Rachel Jones and Haley Bruns, and two freshmen, Rosie Lee and Kalli Bogard and ran 4:32 to win by over a second.  Bruns also won JV high jump with a jump of 4’9, while teammate Becca Staples jumped 4’7 for a 1-2 OE finish.

Athlete of the Meet Spotlight

For running three events while posting impressive splits in the 4x100 and 4x200, the athlete of the meet award went to freshman Kayla Habich.  Habich ran the leadoff leg on the meet-winning 4x100 and also clocked a 13.76 in the JV 100m.  She also anchored the varsity 4x200 relay.  Habich is one of a talented freshmen class and has consistently performed in multiple events and levels.

Notable Performances

OE Distance had a strong night with the 4x800 win, but also earned strong performances from Abby Flammersfeld and Alexis Henz in the 1600m.  Both ran PRs against a strong field with Henz finishing in 5:30 and Flammersfeld finishing in 5:23.  Those numbers were good enough for spots on the OE Top Ten.  Freshman Morgan Ede ran a sub-12 minute debut 3200m running an 11:57 against another strong field.  The Wolves also got a surprise performance from newcomer Mackenzie Cook with a PR in high jump where she jumped more than four times her own height.  After her JV 100m win, Meghan Stock came back to the long sprints and ran a 62.44 in the 400 to finish 4th against a field of state qualifiers. Kareema Lawal also took 4th with a PR in Disc of 98’1.

Final Word

Against a strong set of teams, Oswego East ran well and competed.  As the conference meet draws nearer, the young Wolves got some valuable racing experience that they can parlay into a strong finish to the season.

April 15, 2017--Oswego East Invitational

Recap

\Oswego East, hosting the 15-team OE Invite for the 8th consecutive year, enjoyed warm temperatures and strong winds to begin the outdoor season well.  Varsity took 3rd place, while JV finished 2nd.  The varsity team was paced by the winning 4x400 team of Alexis Henz, Emma McCullough, Abby Flammersfeld and Meghan Stock (4:12) and second places finishes from Maya Taylor in Long Jump (17’7.75), Henz in the 800 (2:30), Flammersfeld in the 1600 (5:31), and the 4x800 team of Morgan Ede, Isabella Gyori, Amanda Bonczowski and Henz (10:11).  In earning the top three finish, the varsity scored points in 15 of the 18 events for a well-balanced team performance.  The JV level scored points in 17 of 18 events including 3 relay wins and 2 individual wins on their way to a 2nd place finish.

Athletes of the Meet Spotlight

The award for Athlete of the Meet went to junior hurdler Maria Siragusa.  Siragusa exceeded her seed in both 100h and 300h and was able to pick up two 7th places finishes, scoring valuable points for the Wolves.  A first-year hurdler, Siragusa has improved with each race and looks to add to the balanced team scoring.

Notable Performances

On the day, the Wolves saw a strong series of performances from the sophomore class.   Meghan Stock, in addition to a strong 4x400 leg, took 4th in the open 400 (62.6).  Abby Ford scored a PR in the 100h (18.51) in addition to running the 300h and anchoring the JV 4x400 1st place relay team.  Brynn Lenert hit a PR in Pole Vault, clearing 8’0 feet to finish 7th and score points for the Wolves.  Brielle Humbird competed in a tight High Jump contest, and finished 6th on tie breaks with a jump of 4’11.

The freshmen class also ran well throughout the day at both the varsity and JV level.  Along with leading off the varsity 4x800 with a PR split, Morgan Ede cruised to a 3 second victory in the JV 800 with a time of 2:38.  Kara Webb also earned a 4th place finish in the 3200 (12:33) at the varsity level.  Mackenzie Cook took advantage of the stiff headwind in disc to blow away the competition with a throw of 128’0.  The freshmen relay team of Kayla Habich, Kayla Olschanski, Nyla Talton and Jimena Godinez won the JV 4x200 by almost a full second (1:55.10).  And freshman Maddie Heinrich earned a double PR in both Pole Vault (7’0) and Long Jump (14’5), taking 3rd and 4th respectively at the JV level.

The Wolves also saw JV event wins from the 4x800 team of Kitty Scheerenberger, Katherine Sim, Rosie Lee and Liliana Mendoza (10:43) and the 4x400 team of Averey Jones, Natalie Lee, Godinez and Ford (4:34).  Jordyn Jones capped off the JV-level wins with a 3 foot victory in Shot Put, throwing an outdoor best 31’2.

Final Word

Balanced scoring and some gritty performances characterized OE’s outdoor invite debut for 2017.  Against good competition, the Wolves earned valuable experience that will translate into success as the outdoor season moves on.

March 18 and March 23 (Indoor SPC and Batavia Bulldog Relays)

Oswego East finished its indoor season with a 6th place finish at the unofficial Indoor Conference meet and followed up the following week with strong showings at the unscored Bulldog Relays.  At the indoor conference meet, the Wolves claimed the 4x400 title for the second consecutive year.  The 4x400 team of Meghan Stock, Alexis Henz, Emma McCullough and Abby Flammersfeld took control of the race early and never looked back on their way to a 3 second victory.  Katie Finin claimed 2nd place in Pole Vault with a PR jump of 9’0.  This was an indoor school record, eclipsing the old mark by a full foot.  OE also earned four 3rd place finishes with Maya Taylor in Long Jump (17’8), Meghan Stock in the 400 (62.81), who also earned Athlete of the Meet honors, Ty Battle in the High Jump (5’1) and the 4x800 team of Abby Flammersfeld, Rosie Lee, Katherine Sim and Morgan Ede (10:30).  Mackenzie Cook also had a strong performance in Long Jump, jumping more than 10 times her body length.  Alexis Henz lowered her own school record in the 800 by taking 4th (2:24) in a highly competitive race.  Taylor’s mark in the Long Jump was also good enough to qualify her for the unofficial Indoor State Meet at Illinois Wesleyan University to end the indoor competition season.

After the Indoor Conference meet, the Wolves had one last indoor competition at the Bulldog Relays.  The meet included a 4x200, 4x400, 4x800, Sprint Medley Relay (200, 200, 400, 800) and a Distance Medley Relay (1200, 400, 800, 1600).  Oswego East ran an All-Freshmen 4x200 relay featuring strong performances by Kayla Habich, Nyla Talton, Maddie Heinrich and Jayna Dias.  The highlight of the meet was the 3rd place (out of 19 teams) with a time of 12:58.  Freshman Kara Webb led off with a strong 1200 before handing the baton to Meghan Stock who ran a sub-62 second 400.  Alexis Henz ran a 2:25 800 leg, just one second off of her school record pace and then Abby Flammersfeld ran a PR 5:23 in the 1600 to earn Athlete of the Meet Honors.

Oswego East wrapped a successful indoor season in which the team composed of a majority of freshmen and sophomores were able to compete in high level races to prepare them for outdoor season.

March 10, 2017--Batavia Distance Madness

Recap:

At the 3rd Annual Batavia Distance Madness meet, the Oswego East Distance crew put up a series of personal records and collectively ran their fastest times of the year.  With nine athletes qualifying for the heats of the 800, 1600 and 3200 and another eight competing in the open races, the Wolves went a perfect 17 for 17 on PRs, including six marks fast enough for a place on the school’s Top 10 Indoor Record Board.

Athlete of the Meet Spotlight:

Alexis Henz was the coaches’ pick for Athlete of the Meet.  A week after setting a school indoor record in the 800, the senior came to Batavia ready to compete in the 1600.  Throughout a tight and physical race, with plenty of bumping and contact, Henz came away with an all-time PR of 5:29.58.  That time was good enough for third place all-time on the OE Indoor Record Board, trailing only teammate Abby Flammersfeld and 3-time State Champion Ariel Michalek (2012).  Henz’s effort throughout the week in practice and her tough performance in her 1600 heat earned her the Athlete of the Meet recognition.

Notable Performances:

With 17 PRs for 17 different athletes, every performance was notable for one reason or another.  Hannah Jaros, Lily Mendoza, Emma McKillip and Shannon Weizeorick, started things off with four season bests in the Open 800 and were followed shortly after by Meghan Murphy, Alexandra Dillman, Maddie Patterson and Gabby DeBoer each running sub-6:30 in the Open 1600.

Kendra Standish (12:08) and Elyssa Gall (12:18) ran tough, tactical races on their way to 3200m PRs.  Both times were good enough to crack the OE Indoor Top 10, with Standish claiming 5th and Gall 6th.  Mackenzie Cook, eyeing her mom’s PR at Batavia, shattered it by running 10:45, but was controversially disqualified and mysteriously doesn’t appear on any of the heat sheets or results.

With three competitors qualifying in the 800, OE saw strong performances from Isabella Gyori (2:30.03), Rosie Lee (2:38.28) and Kitty Scheerenberger (2:41.93).  Gyori’s time ranks 4th All-Time Indoors at OE, while Lee and Scheerenberger each improved almost 10 seconds from their previous 800 race.

Four Wolves qualified for the 1600 Heats: Abby Flammersfeld, Alexis Henz, Morgan Ede and Katherine Sim.  Each ran all-time PRs, indoor or outdoor.  Sim ran in Section 5 and bettered her seed and season best by 10 seconds, running a 5:46.76.  The freshman Ede, following a strong debut last week in the 3200 and running in Section 4 of the 1600, ran much of the race in tight spaces and battled her way to a 5:39.16, good for 6th on the OE Indoor Top 10.  Henz ran her 5:29 in Section 3 and was followed by teammate Flammersfeld, who was running in Section 2.  Taking control of the race from the start, Flammersfeld led the first 800 before battling through a tough third leg of the race to close the final 400 in 83 seconds for final time of 5:28.49.  That was good enough to rank 2nd on the OE Indoor Top 10 and was three seconds better than her seed and season best.

Final Word:

Competing in one of the premier distance meets in the state, with deep and talented teams like Batavia, Downers Grove South, Hinsdale Central, Naperville North, Minooka, and Yorkville, was a great experience for the young OE Distance crew.  With only one senior among the nine qualifiers, Oswego East got some valuable racing experience that they look to translate into success in the outdoor season.

March 4, 2017--Batavia Pete Heimsath Indoor Invite

Recap:

Oswego East, paced by 26 individual PRs, finished third at the Pete Heimsath Invitational at Batavia on Saturday, March 4th.  The team effort by the Wolves was led by scorers in 11 of the 15 events.  Maya Taylor made her season debut by winning long jump with a jump of 16’9.5.  East also got second place finishes from Camryn Smiley in triple jump (33’2) and in the 4x400 (4:14.84).  The 4x400 team of Meghan Stock, Alexis Henz, Emma McCullough and Abby Flammersfeld ran a season-best time that ranks as a Top 15 time in the state.  Third place finishes went to Henz in the 800 (season best 2:27.95) and the 4x800 team of Isabella Gyori, Amanda Bonczkowski, Elyssa Gall and Kendra Standish (10:33.78).

Athletes of the Meet Spotlight:

The throwing crew earned Athletes of the Meet honors by posting a second straight week of PRs from all competitors.  They were paced by Anna Aubuchon and Kareema Lawal who tied for 5th with career best throws of 33’10 each.  Liz Borwick, Kate Koska, Gabby Garrett and Dyanna Carillo also set PRs.  The throwing crew’s improvement this year has been remarkable.  In OE’s three meets, the each thrower has improved from meet to meet.  The depth and improvement shown by the throwers has been an early highlight for the Wolves so far as they look towards the outdoor season.

Notable Performances:

Making their career debuts in the 3200m, freshmen Morgan Ede (12:21) and Kara Webb (12:29) ran a strong race together, finishing 4th and 6th respectively and scoring points for the Wolves.  They were joined in the 3200m by teammates Alexandra Dillman and Gabby DeBoer, who each shattered previous PRs by over 20 seconds.  In addition to the 4x800’s 3rd place finish, OE’s other 4x800 relay also performed well, taking 6th place overall in the opening event.  The race from Katerine Sim, Rosie Lee, Meghan Murphy and Kitty Scheerenberger topped every other 2nd/B/JV relays as well as two other varsity/A relays.  Olga Koval had an outstanding day, setting PRs in both the 55 (7.90) and the 200 (28.41).  Despite not even being in attendance, Mackenzie Cook dominated the 3mo and under division, posting double wins in the 3200 and 55.  The 400m Dash was incredibly competitive with 11 girls, including four Wolves, separated by less than 2 seconds.  Avery Jones (1:06. 60) and Natalie Lee (1:06.77) led the way.  Abby Ford, running in her first meet of the season, clocked a 1:07.14, while Kalli Bogard ran a 1:08.36 PR.  The senior Lee, along with the freshmen Jones and Bogard matched their open 400 splits in teaming with freshman Jimena Godinez in the 4x400 (4:33.15) to win their heat and finish 8th overall.   Juniors Kendra Standish (5:35) and Isabella Gyori (5:40) ran season bests in the 1600 while finishing in the top 10.  Oswego East also captured three of the top eight spots in the 200m Dash with Maya Taylor, Olga Koval, and Amanda Osman finishing 4th, 7th and 8th respectively.

Final Word:

The third place finish by the Wolves was a strong performance overall.  The 8-team meet was won by the hosts Batavia, with Glenbard East finishing in second, just eight points ahead of Oswego East.  Led by a balanced mix of veterans and newcomers, OE looks to continue its team-oriented success as the indoor season wraps up and the outdoor season begins.
