2016 IHSA State Track & Field 3rd Place Team!!!

2016 IHSA Sectional Champions!

Back to Back Conference Champions!!!

Wow!  What a night!

As the head coach of the Oswego East Girls’ Track and Field Program, I could not be more proud of what took place last night, May 5, 2016.  Heading into the Southwest Prairie Conference Meet, we were in place to win by a small margin of ten points over perennial powerhouse and 2015 cross country state champions Minooka.  Not only did we deliver our expected outcome, but we smashed all expectations in the process.

Less than one month ago, we lost our own Oswego East Invitational by one half of a point to Batavia.  They have a very strong and balanced team, but we identified 12 instances in which we missed opportunities to score more points by small margins.  We are talking less than a tenth of a second or a half of an inch, in some cases.  Last night, every single athlete on the team did what was in their power to make up for those missed opportunities in April.  Granted, the day started out a little less than perfect.  The amazing thing is that many of the athletes who had a less than stellar start to the day came back with a vengeance and more than made up for what they were lacking early on.

Field events have the opportunity to be the spark that ignites the team at the Conference Meet.  After a few minutes of competition, it appeared we were not having the start to the meet we needed.  Knowing how that spark can lead any team to a Conference Title, I was nervous that we weren’t going to get the job done and that someone else would slide in.  Sade Akinfe and Maya Taylor were seeded 1-4 in the long jump, but we felt they could place 1-2.  We were shocked that Sade missed first place by a mere 1.25 inches, and Maya struggled to get into the final and placed 7th.  Both Sade and Maya are experienced athletes and gamers when it comes to Conference.  They were not happy with their performances and claimed that they would make up for it later in the day in their other events.  I never had any doubt, but they definitely made good on their claims.

Moving to high jump, again we were hoping for big things.  Stephanie Jones had cleared 5’0 the week before and 5’1 in practice, and we would not have been surprised to see her go 5’3 with the right conditions.  The field of high jumpers was stacked this year, as Steph’s 5’0 only had her seeded as high as 10th place.  Becca was seeded 14th with 4’8.  Although both of them out-performed their seeds, we were unable to secure points.  Both Steph and Becca tied for 7th place with jumps of 4’9.

Moving on to pole vault, we had our first big moment for the night—one we weren’t sure we would be getting a week ago.  Mackenzie Kennedy and Alexia Stamas were seeded 4th and 7th in pole vault, respectively.  At Glenbard North a week ago, Mackenzie sprained her ankle—a pretty nasty one that that.  Given all that Mackenzie had been through with injuries in the past, her resilience and ability to come back fighting never cease to amaze me.  We didn’t really let Mackenzie do much on her ankle the entire weekend or early part of the week.  The trainers worked with her, and Coach Aister had her do a few exercises and approaches to make the decision if we would even let her attempt to vault or not.  We wanted to keep in mind not only the conference meet, but also the looming sectional meet and the need to clear 10’3” in another week’s time.  Based on her progress, we decided to let Mackenzie compete.  She would be going in at 8’6” and hope for the best.  Not only did she clear 8’6” on the first attempt, but she cleared 9’0” on the first attempt as well, securing a 3rd place finish and All-Conference Honors.  Alexia was looking great at 8’0” and 8’6” and came up with 5th place team points, which was a nice point swing in our advantage.

In shot put, we didn’t have the breakthrough we were looking for, as Asan Hawkins bettered her seed by one place but came up short of points in 7th, and Kareema Lawal matched her seed in 10th place.  In discus, however, we had a huge point accumulation from Anna Aubuchon!  Anna had a huge PR, throwing 103’3” and taking 2nd place to be our first All-Conference thrower in several years.  Overall, we came out of the throws up big points.

The final field event to get underway was triple jump.  Sade Akinfe has not been a triple jumper all through her track career, as she excelled in the sprints and relays in addition to long jump.  Knowing her potential, Coach Ideran had faith that she would be the right call for the conference lineup.  Sade ended up winning the conference championship in triple jump, out-performing Plainfield North’s Anna Laudizio.  Sade was seeded 5th, making a huge point gain and more-than-making-up for the points she missed in long jump.

The first running event final on the track is the 4x800 meter relay.  It was a very exciting match up between Oswego, Plainfield North, Plainfield South, Minooka, and Oswego East.  Alexis Henz, Isabella Gyori, Abby Flammersfeld, and Ashley Buado kept it exciting, and we came up with a 4th place finish.  The group was expected to place 5th but made up points and came out ahead of cross country State Champs Minooka.

The 4x100 meter relay of Adaora Onyeabo, Sade Akinfe, Morgan Harris, and Maya Taylor set a new meet record, running 48.46.  The relay looked fast, despite a rocky first exchange.

Next up was the 3200 meter run.  From the first lap, the top seven athletes separated from the rest of the field.  Two Minooka runners increased their lead, while two Oswego runners, a Plainfield South runner, and Kendra Standish and Abby Cain battled for a top six finish and team points.  Kendra and Abby fought hard and were able to secure 5th and 6th place, respectively.

The 100 hurdles provided a momentum boost, as Tara Schumacher and Rachel Roschi ran great and placed 1st and 3rd.  Morgan Harris and Adaora Onyeabo added more points, taking 1st and 4th in the 100 meter dash.

Up next was the 800 meter run, featuring a fast field and Alexis Henz and Ashley Buado from Oswego East.  Alexis out-performed her seed, taking 5th place and scoring an additional team point.

The 4x200 meter relay of Adaora Onyeabo, Emma McCullough, Sade Akinfe, and Maya Taylor ran a season best time and matched their 3rd place seed.

The 400 meter dash was quite the race, with Plainfield South’s Daijah Brown pushing Morgan Harris to the finish line in 1st place.  Teammate Abby Flammersfeld followed up with big 3rd place points.

In the 300 meter hurdles, Tara Schumacher was again victorious.  Rachel Roschi picked up an extra team point than expected by finishing 5th with a season best time.

The 1600 meter run was a tough challenge, but Elyssa Gall and Kendra Standish were up for it.  They finished just out of the points in 7th and 8th, respectively.

The final two events of the night were extremely exciting, as Morgan Harris won her third individual event, the 200 meter dash.  Maya Taylor got her retribution, securing 2nd place points and running a personal best time.  Following the 200, the 4x400 relay team of Ashley Buado, Tara Schumacher, Alexis Henz, and Abby Flammersfeld held off Romeoville and Oswego to take 1st place in 4:03.68.

One of the things that stands out most is that in every race that Morgan Harris won, we also secured a top 4 finish from our number 2 athlete.  I give credit to those athletes—Adaora, Maya, and Abby—as well as to Morgan, for working hard in and out of practice to make those goals a reality.

The 4x400 was perhaps the most exciting event of the night, as both the JV and Varsity squads were victorious.  Madeline Timken, Nadia Fonseca, Rachel Jones, and Emma McCullough ran away with the win, running 4:20.01.

Overall in JV action, the Wolves finished 3rd to Minooka and Oswego.  Nadia Fonseca was a double event winner, winning the 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles in convincing fashion.  Destinee Lewis was 2nd in the high jump, while Rachel Jones was 2nd in the 400 meter dash.  The team of Madeline Timken, Alecia Sahatdjian, Amanda Osman, and Madison Boissiere set a new meet record in the JV 4x200 meter relay, running 1:50.73.

Many times throughout the night, I was checking my phone for updates, to see if we could relax.  I know that Coaches Aister, Ideran, Downs, and Kittler were confident.   I, however, could not rest until I knew we had the title wrapped up.  Fortunately, the team did not relax or rest, as they built a 53-point lead on runner up Minooka.  The feeling of winning last year’s conference title could never be replicated.  However, working alongside my fellow coaches and with our 106 athletes throughout the season to this end felt pretty remarkable.  From top to bottom, JV to Varsity, our athletes performed.  They stepped up.  They exceeded expectations.  Our seniors have left a mark on our program that I hope never goes away.  Not only are they talented, but they are driven to be successful and to take others with them as great leaders.

Last year, we felt we surprised the SPC by winning conference.  This year, we had a target on our backs.  We won the indoor SPC title as well, which no team has done for the past 5 years.  A mere three weeks ago, Minooka beat us by 30 points at the Neuqua Valley Invitational.  To win conference this year was not an easy feat.  It is incredible that our athletes made it look that way, and that they scored so many more points than expected.  It shows a true team effort.  It demonstrates the work ethic that these athletes possess and how they will stop at nothing to find both individual and team success.

Thank you to our 2016 Seniors!  Back to back Conference Champs!!!

On Saturday, April 16, 2016, the Oswego East Girls' Track and Field Team had a great showing, but came up short of the title at their own Invitational.  Batavia won the Varsity meet, with 131 points.  Oswego East scored 130.5, and almost took the lead from the Bulldogs in the final event of the day, separating themselves from the 16-team field.  Rich South finished third with 76 points, followed by Bolingbrook with 67.5, Brooks College Prep with 49, and Rich Central with 45.  The Wolves were led by two individual wins from Morgan Harris and all four relays.  Harris won the 200 meter dash in 24.62 and the 400 meter dash in 56.86.  Tara Schumacher added a win in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 45.71 and a runner-up finish in the 100 meter hurdles in 15.50.  Rachel Roschi finished 4th in the 300 meter hurdles in 51.27.  Sade Akinfe placed 2nd in long jump with 17'5, and Maya Taylor placed 3rd with 15'10.  Kendra Standish and Abby Cain went 2-3 in the 3200 meter run.  Standish finished 2nd in 12:03.07, and Cain finished in 3rd in 12:10.78.  Mackenzie Kennedy added 2nd place points in the pole vault with her jump of 8'6.  Alexia Stamas cleared the same height, but placed 4th on misses.  In shot put, Asan Hawkins (32'1) and Kareema Lawal (31'9.5) placed 7th and 8th, respectively.

All four relays ran very well, scoring top three finishes in each one.  The 4x800 meter relay of Alexis Henz, Ashley Buado, Isabella Gyori, and Abby Flammersfeld placed 3rd and broke 10 minutes with a time of 9:59.92.  The 4x200 meter relay of Adaora Onyeabo, Emma McCullough, Camryn Smiley, and Maya Taylor finished 3rd in 1:48.16.  The 4x100 meter relay of Adaora Oneaybo, Sade Akinfe, Morgan Harris, and Maya Taylor placed first, running a very tough 48.26.  In the final event of the day, the Wolves placed 2nd in 4:06.20 for the 4x400 meter relay.  Ashley Buado, Tara Schumacher, Emma McCullough, and Abby Flammersfeld ran a strong race for this early in the outdoor season.

On the JV level, Oswego East came out on top, scoring 117.5 points.  Batavia placed second with 83.5, followed by Bolingbrook with 80 and Rosary with 60.  The lone event champions for the Wolves were Elange Tande in the long jump (14'7), and the 4x800 meter relay.  Kitty Scheerenberger, Jessica Eberly, Halie Heidkamp, and Katherine Sim teamed up for a come from behind win in 10:34.51.  The Wolves had two placers in multiple events, showing the depth and consistency of the team.

Athletes of the meet were Morgan Harris, Tara Schumacher, Abby Ford, Anna Aubuchon, and Alexia Stamas.  Teammates of the meet were Cameron Woods and Kimberly Geffrard.  Other notable performances included Amanda Bonczkowski's first race since cross country season, Halie Heidkamp breaking the 6 minute barrier in the 1600, Anna Aubuchon making finals in discus, and Asan Hawkins and Kareema Lawal both making finals in shot put.  On a day filled with a lot of great action and strong performances, it was bittersweet to come up just a half a point short.  The Wolves are back in action Wednesday at Oswego and Friday at Neuqua Valley.  Great job, ladies!  Keep the sights on May!

February 15, 2016--Time Trial

This year's Time Trial did not disappoint!  The returning members of the team set 32 PRs in total, improving upon their best indoor times from the 2015 season!  That means that these individuals set better marks than they did at the end of last year's indoor season!  These PRs are a direct result of hard work in the off season.  Hitting the weight room, running cross country, and training in the winter months has been so important to our athletes.  It shows us where we are as a team at this early point in the season.  Moving forward--nothing will be given.  Every second, every inch, every PR has to be EARNED.  Great work today by everyone!  We had great leadership and help from our team in having a smooth Time Trial!  Ready to work hard again tomorrow!
