Akinfe and Harris Medal at STATE!

Sade Akinfe and Morgan Harris both brought home hardware from the 2015 IHSA State Track and Field Meet by placing in the top 9 on the final day of competition.  Sade entered Saturday's finals in 2nd place with her long jump of 18'9.75".  She maintained her spot on Day 2 and took home a silver medal for her efforts.  Sade is currently the highest Oswego East field event athlete at the State Meet.  Morgan improved upon her seed and placed fourth in the 400 meter dash with her time of 56.01.

Seven Athletes Qualify for IHSA State Meet!!!

Oswego East junior Sade Akinfe was the spark that ignited the Wolves to qualify a total of seven athletes for the IHSA State Meet next week at Eastern Illinois University!  Akinfe's long jump of 18'9.25 was a huge personal best, school record, and well over the state qualifying mark.  The Wolves placed fourth at the Naperville North Sectional, less than 10 points behind 1st place Naperville North.  Twelve points separated the top six teams at the meet.  Senior Brittany Davis was the next to qualify, placing second in the discus with a throw of 111'11, which betters the school record Davis set last season.  The first running event to qualify was the 4x100 meter relay team of Morgan Harris, Sade Akinfe, Abby Flammersfeld, and Maya Taylor.  Tara Schumacher followed that performance with a second place finish in the 100 meter hurdles.  Abby Flammersfeld and Morgan Harris both qualified in the 400 meter dash, and Tara Schumacher won her first sectional title in the 300 meter hurdles.  In the final event of the night, the 4x400 meter relay of Ashley Buado, Tara Schumacher, Abby Flammersfeld, and Morgan Harris won a thrilling race in 4:01.74.  Harris, Flammersfeld, and Schumacher each will run in three events next week.  Akinfe will compete in two, while Buado, Davis, and Taylor will each compete in one.  The Wolves had a banner day, despite the constant rain and wind.  This marks the first time since 2010 that a relay will head down state, and the most qualifiers to advance since the same year.  Congratulations and best of luck next week!

For the first time in school history, the Oswego East Wolves Girls' Track and Field Team are SPC Conference Champions!  On Thursday, May 7, the team exemplified the definition of compete:  Strive to gain or win something by defeating or establishing superiority over others who are trying to do the same.  The whole team effort was evident.  Oswego East won with 124 points over defending champ Minooka, who ended the night with 114 points.  They were followed by Oswego with 93, Plainfield South with 78, Plainfield North with 54, Plainfield East with 50, Plainfield Central with 25, and Romeoville with 20.  The Wolves began the night with a one-two punch in the long jump with Sade Akinfe winning (17'7.75") and Maya Taylor taking second (16'7.75")  Emily Flammersfeld followed the trend and took third in triple jump (33'9").  Mackenzie Kennedy also scored big, securing fourth place in pole vault (8'6").  Morganne Jones finished her high school career as a four-time All-Conference athlete in the high jump.  Jones placed third in the high jump (4'11") and also finished fourth in the 100 meter hurdles.  Maya Taylor and Morgan Harris were the work horses of the team, each earning four All-Conference accolades.  In addition to long jump, Taylor was fourth in the 100 meter dash (13.48), and contributed to a first-place 4x100 meter relay and 4x200 meter runner-up finish.  Morgan Harris was third in the 200 meter dash (26.15), third in the 400 meter dash (59.06), and led two first-place relays in the 4x100 and 4x400.  Abby Flammersfeld added three All-Conference performances of her own, taking fourth in the 400 meter dash (50.09), and she was on the same championship relays as Harris.  Tara Schumacher also finished with three honors, as a member of the 4x400 meter relay, winning the 300 meter hurdles (45.96), and taking second in the 100 meter hurdles (16.14).  Sade Akinfe added two other terrific performances to her long jump title, running in both the 4x100 and 4x200 meter relays. Coach Cook Receives Wonderful Send-Off to the Boston Marathon!

During the Oswego East Invitational, members of the Oswego East Girls' Track team marched onto the infield with a 15 foot banner, wishing Coach Cook Good Luck at the 2015 Boston Marathon.

From Coach Cook:

Thank you to the entire team for being so supportive and encouraging!  When I saw the banner being marched onto the infield, I got a little choked up and realized how lucky I am to coach such wonderful people.  I always say I get to coach the best students at Oswego East High School, and it really shows the character of the entire team to put something together that was so special to me.  We don't often tell you how much time we spend pouring over lineups, results, training, and team building opportunities, but being a track and field coach requires a huge commitment and a lot of time!  There are many ways in which that time feels worth it, and seeing the outpouring of support from the girls I get to coach everyday was one of those times.  The Boston Marathon is a privilege to get to experience, and it's all the more special to know that my athletes have my back and were cheering me on the entire time!  I'm proud of the 3:07 I ran, knowing I experienced a lot of the same frustrations you face everyday--from training to coping with injuries and working through physical therapy just to get to the starting line.  Thank you so much!  Your support means so much to me!!!
