2019 Season and Results

2019 Season and Results

There is nothing quite like Cross Country in October!  On Saturday, October 5, 2019, the Oswego East Wolves competed at the Wheaton North Falcon Invitational on a crisp and beautiful fall morning.  The Junior/Senior race was the first to toe the line.  Oswego East had a strong showing from junior Angie Goduto, who broke the 20 minute barrier for the first time, running 19:46 and finishing in 17th place overall.  Angie was followed by Emily Salmeron (28th in 20:15), Samantha Garcia (39th in 20:34), Emma McKillip (41st in 20:39) and Liliana Mendoza (54th in 21:07).  The team took 6th place with 174 points behind Lockport, New Trier, Benet, York, and Glenbard West.

For the only time all season, the top 7 runners ran solo, competing in flighted races and racing head to head against the runners from the other 20 teams.  Sophomore Maddi Amer was the first to run in Flight 7.  Maddi battled with the pack and finished 11th in her flight in 20:26.  Next up was Ana Barroso, looking like she's coming into her form in the racing weeks of the season.  Ana finished in 10th place in 20:00.  In the 5th flight was sophomore Hannah King.  Hannah had a major milestone in breaking 20 minutes for the first time, placing 10th in 19:58.  Kara Webb was out to a great start with the 4th flight and finished 6th in her flight in 18:58.  In the 3rd flight was junior Naylah Allen, who looked amazing through 2 miles and brought home 5th in her flight in 18:36.  Morgan Ede was the top finisher of the day, taking 4th place in the 2nd flight in 18:11.  In the 1st flight, Maddie Zarembski went head to head with some top area runners and finished 14th in 18:25.  The team score for Oswego East was 60 points, good enough for 8th place.  New Trier (52), Lockport (46), Glenbard West (43), O'Fallon (43), York (42), Neuqua Valley (42), and Benet Academy (25) scored less points over the 7 flights and finished ahead of the Wolves in the team standings.

The last race of the day was the Fresh/Soph crew.  Sophomore Leah Allgaier built her way through the race, finishing in 14th place with a time of 19:53.  Freshman Meghan Johnson was next to break the 20 minute barrier in 19:58, which was good for 18th place.  Nicky Hartigan (21st) and Veronica Hamilton (22nd), were just outside of that milestone, finishing in 20:02 and 20:04, respectively.  Molly Ede was the fifth scorer for the Wolves, finishing in 51st place in 20:47.  The freshmen and sophomore crew had the highest team finish of the day, finishing 3rd with 116 points behind York (15 points) and St. Charles East (116 points).

Today was definitely a step in the right direction! We had 28 season or lifetime PRs, and we got to welcome Leah, Angie, Meghan J, and Hannah to the Sub 20 club! Several athletes PR'd by more than a minute (Nicky, Meghan J, Tanya, Monica, Estelle, Ximena, Taylor W, and Lanaya), a few over or close to 2 minutes (Taj, Hibba, Karina, and Loryn), and Sophia M set a personal best by almost 3 minutes!   Great job, ladies!

Wolves Battle Storms and Wet Conditions to Take Third at Naperville Invite

It took two days, a lightning cancellation, and plenty of rain and mud, but Oswego East competed in the Naperville Invite on 9/28 at Naperville North High School.  The Wolves finished third by one point to co-host Naperville Central and behind Benet Academy. OE was led by Naylah Allen who ran 19:04 in slippery, muddy conditions to finish 6th overall.  Close behind were Morgan Ede (19:06, 9th), Maddie Zarembski (19:11, 11th) and Kara Webb (19:20, 13th). Rounding out the scoring for the Wolves was freshman Sydney Williams who ran a season-best 20:19.  The 1:15 split between the 1st and 5th runner was the smallest of the season for the team and showed great growth.

In addition to the freshman Williams’ PR, freshmen Veronica Hamilton (20:59), Maggie Schiltz (21:51) and Ashley Sniegowski (22:33) all ran significant season bests in less-than-ideal conditions.  Since the Fresh-Soph, Varsity and Open races were combined into one, the Wolves got to see large packs of girls working together. Hamilton, Hannah King and Emily Salmeron finished within 5 seconds of each other and Nicky Hartigan, Molly Ede, Meghan Johnson and Sam Garcia had a split of less than 20 seconds.  By seeing packs come together and splits come down, the girls showed significant growth and toughness in an otherwise difficult and soggy race!

Oswego East Wins on Senior Night!

Oswego East claimed its third and final weekday meet victory on a beautiful Senior Night at OE.  The Wolves scored 20 points, placing five runners in the top seven led by Maddie Zarembski’s individual win in 19:07.  Filling out out the scoring were Naylah Allen (19:31, 3rd), Morgan Ede (20:01, 4th), Kara Webb (20:03, 6th) and Ana Barroso (20:41, 7th).  Hannah King also registered a top ten finish for the Wolves with an 8th place finish in 21:09. The 1-5 split for OE was a season-best 1:34.

Four-year seniors Morgan Ede, Kara Webb, Emma McKillip, Lili Mendoza and Meghan Murphy ran their final regular season race at Oswego East and were joined on the line by first year XC seniors Taj Allison, Tanya Koomjohn and Fran Laube.  OE also honored three-year cross country members and current senior managers Jess Lopez and Gaby Viano along with first year managers Jayna Dias and Abby Ftacek on Senior Night.

Despite the day being an honor for our seniors, the underclassmen for the Wolves showed up and delivered some strong performances.  Veronica Hamilton, Angie Goduto and Meghan Johnson, Emily Salmeron, Nicky Hartigan and Sam Garcia finished from 11th to 17th and had an 11-second split on their 6-woman pack.  That type of teamwork and selfless effort was a perfect tribute to our seniors and represented a big step forward in the course of our season.

Oswego East Places Fourth at Hornet-Red Devil Invitational!

On Saturday, September 7, 2019, the Oswego East Girls Cross Country Team took on a new challenge at the Hornet-Red Devil Invitational at Katherine Legge Memorial Park in Hinsdale.  The Wolves were in pursuit of a great race from the beginning with Morgan Ede, Maddie Zarembski, Naylah Allen, and Kara Webb well positioned in the front of the race.  Morgan finished 12th in 18:46, Maddie 13th in 18:47, Naylah 17th in 19:12, and Kara 24th in 19:16.  Sophomore Maddi Amer was the 5th scorer for the Wolves, who finished in 70th in 20:22.  Leah Allgaier and Angie Goduto were 6th and 7th in the chute for the Wolves, with Leah at 20:56 (96th place) and Angie at 21:04 (107th place).  Having 4 athletes in the top 24 was an impressive display, and one that earned the team a tie for 3rd place with 133 points at the prestigious invitational.  Oswego East did lose the tie breaker on the 6th runner criteria and officially placed 4th, ahead of several perennial powerhouses and pre-season ranked teams.

In F/S action, the Wolves were led by freshman Sydney Williams.  Sydney showed no signs of holding back and was out in the front group from the gun.  She finished 12th in 20:22.  Freshmen Veronica Hamilton and Grace Praxmarer moved their way throughout the race together, passing girls the entire way and finished 28th and 29th in 21:10 and 21:11, respectively.  Meghan Johnson, also a freshman, clocked her first high school race in 21:33 in 43rd place.  Molly Ede, who early on set a strong pace for the freshmen to follow, had some trouble crossing the creek and ultimately finished in the fifth scoring position in 21:38 and 48th place.  As a team, the group finished 6th with 153 points.

In the open race, seven OE athletes ran 1.93 miles and finished in 9th as a team.  Newcomer Hannah Martynus led the way in 84th place in 15:25.  Sofia Alaniz had an impressive improvement and finished 108th in 15:53.  Ximena Torres-Ramos was next in 16:09 and 117th place, followed by Sophia Mejia (150th in 17:04), Taylor Scott (157th in 17:16) and Hibba Hoda (16th in 17:29).

The Wolves are off to a great start for the 2019 season!  And the best is yet to come!

Wolves open season with perfect score!

On Thursday, August 29, 2019, the Oswego East Girls Cross Country team opened their season at home against Plainfield Central.  The Wolves recorded a perfect score, and placed 12 runners before Plainfield Central's first athlete.  Returning State Qualifier, sophomore Maddie Zarembski won the race in a time of 19:58.  Maddie was joined in setting the pace for the race by senior Morgan Ede, who ran 20:04.  Junior Naylah Allen (20:30) and senior Kara Webb (20:36) finished close behind in 3rd and 4th.  Sophomore Maddi Amer was the 5th point scorer and placed 5th in 21:26.  Freshman Sydney Williams, in her first high school race, finished 6th in 21:46.  Sophomores Ana Barroso (7th in 21:55) and Leah Allgaier (8th in 22:02) were next in the chute, followed by junior Samantha Garcia (9th in 22:05).  Junior Angie Goduto was the 10th finisher for the Wolves, also with the time of 22:05.  Sophomore Molly Ede finished 11th in 22:16, and freshman Monse Tago finished 12th in 22:22.  The Wolves' attempts to hunt in packs was achieved, and the first race was a success!  Special shoutout to all the first-time 3 mile racers.  After this huge accomplishment, as well as a mere stepping stone, the team looks forward to competing September 7 at Hinsdale Central's Invite.
