Maddie Zarembski Becomes the 3rd OE Individual State Qualifier in School History!

Sports reveal character and help athletes develop lifelong skills.  Both of these were an impressive display on Saturday, October 27 at the IHSA Waubonsie Valley Sectional.  The Oswego East Wolves, rebounding from a disappointing Regional finish, rallied around individual qualifiers Maddie Zarembski and Morgan Ede.  Maddie continued her impressive debut season and finished 15th in the race, qualifying her for the IHSA State Meet on November 3rd.  Maddie completed the challenging 3 mile course in 18:11.  Morgan ran a strong race but faded to finish 52nd, which was not enough to advance to State.  Morgan's time was 19:12.  With this race, Maddie becomes the 3rd individual athlete to qualify for the IHSA State Meet, following Ariel Michalek (2008-2011) and Michelle Borycki (2013).  The entire Oswego East team united and had an incredible week of practice, which featured many PR miles and impressive team training as well.  The Wolves look to continue this trend and help Maddie have a terrific race at State next week!  (A huge CONGRATULATIONS to our boys' team, who advanced to State as a TEAM for the first time in school history!)

Maddie Zarembski and Morgan Ede Qualify for the IHSA Sectional Meet!

On Saturday, October 20, 2018, the Oswego East Wolves had a rough go at the IHSA Regional Meet.  The Wolves, ranked 14th by ILXCTF.com entering the meet, came up 7 points short of advancing to the IHSA Sectional Meet as a team.  Multiple factors ultimately contributed to the outcome, and the stacked field did not help the matter for the Wolves.  Naperville North won the Regional title with 20 points, followed by Oswego with 84 and Benet Academy with 111.  Waubonsie Valley ran the race of their season and finished 4th with 126 points, while Naperville Central (132 points) and Neuqua Valley (149 points) also advanced as teams.  Oswego East finished 7th with 156 points.  The Wolves were led by freshman Maddie Zarembski, who finished an impressive 5th place in 18:04.  Junior Morgan Ede finished 16th in 18:46.  The pack just got too strung out for the competition, as Katherine Sim was 42nd in 19:31, Naylah Allen was 45th in 19:34, Maddi Amer was 48th in 19:49, Elyssa Gall was 56th in 20:18, and Ana Barroso was 62nd in 21:22.

Maddie and Morgan were the top 2 individual performers to advance, and they will head into the Waubonsie Valley Sectional in good position to advance to the State Meet the first week in November.

As a team, the Wolves were unable to get the job done today.  The team, however, responded with poise and grace and will look to draw upon this experience as they continue running and growing together.  Good luck to Maddie and Morgan at Sectionals next week!

Wolves Record Top 15 Finishes in F/S, Open, and Varsity Races at Richard Spring Invitational!

Running at Detweiller Park at the Richard Spring Invitational, Oswego East came away with a series of strong individual performances and learning experience for their growth as a team.

Starting things off, the Fresh/Soph Team came away with an 8th place finish out of 38 teams.  Led by sophomore Naylah Allen’s 12th place finish (19:15), the Wolves used strong pack running from Maddi Amer (20:29), Hannah King (20:34) and Sammie Garcia (20:36) and personal bests from Katie Dunn (20:51) and Molly Ede (21:09) to anchor the team score.  Naylah’s 19:16 time was an incredible 2 minute and 51 second PR from her freshman year best. Her work throughout track season and the summer has paid off as she is one of our most improved runners. In addition to sophomore Sammie Garcia’s 8 second PR at Detweiller, the four freshmen all ran season-bests and displayed the growth and self-improvement that are core values of OEXC.

In the varsity race, the Wolves finished 13th out of 64 teams.  They were led by freshman Maddie Zarembski’s 15th place finish in 17:42.  That time ranks 4th all time for OE runners at Detweiller trailing only state champion Ariel Michalek’s (2012) three fastest times.  It is also the fastest freshman time at Detweiller in OE history. Junior Morgan Ede ran a 12 second PR from last year’s state race at Detweiller to finish second for the Wolves in 18:18.  That time is good for 5th all-time for OE athletes behind Michalek and just seconds off of state-qualifying teammates Abby Flammersfeld (2018) and Kendra Standish (2018). Senior Katherine Sim (18:58) ran a second faster than she did at last year’s Richard Spring and finished 3rd for the Wolves.  OE’s pack was led by freshman Ana Barroso with an all-time PR in 19:48 and was followed by senior Elyssa Gall (20:09), junior Kara Webb (20:12) and freshman Leah Allgaier (20:37). Despite a number of PRs, the Wolves left Peoria with a hunger to improve over the next few weeks in order to be back in November for a second consecutive year.

In the open race, OE used strong performances from Lili Mendoza, Kathleen Sim, and  Emma McKillip to anchor a 5th place finish out of 41 teams. Lili (20:21) ran almost a full minute all-time PR and was 1:26 faster than her previous finish at Detweiller to earn a 13th place finish.  Kathleen (20:36) and Emma (20:45) also each ran almost a full minute faster than last year’s Richard Spring. Junior Meghan Murphy (21:36), freshman Mallory Banks (22:06) and junior Gaby Viano (22:39) rounded out OE’s 5th place team finish.

Overall, the Wolves had strong individual performances for September and look to grow, build and improve on this work to earn a second trip to Peoria and Detweiller in November.

Oswego East Takes 2nd at Yorkville Invitational to Kick Off the Season!

The 2018 Yorkville Invitational was moved from Monday to Tuesday, August 21 at Hoover Outdoor Education Center in Yorkville.  The Wolves chased the host Foxes and finished 2nd with 55 points.  Oswego East was led by freshman Maddie Zarembski in her first race in an OE jersey.  Zarembski finished 5th in 18:45 and is the first Oswego East runner to break 19 minutes since 2011.  Junior Morgan Ede was next, finishing in 8th place in 19:43.  Senior Katherine Sim finished 3rd for the Wolves in 19:49, which was good enough for 9th place right behind Morgan.  The top 5 scoring positions were filled out by junior Kara Webb and freshman Leah Allgaier.  Webb came through in 20:07 in 16th place, and Allgaier wasn't far behind in 20:16 in 17th place.  Senior Elyssa Gall ran her best time in over a year and finished in 20:25 in 19th place.  Freshman Ana Barroso missed a top 20 finish in her debut race by one place, coming in at 20:32 in 21st place.  Every returning athlete from the 2017 team ran faster than their opening races last year, and Becca Wolf had a major breakthrough, racing for the first time in 22 months following post-concussion syndrome.  Overall, it was a great first meet for the Wolves, who look to contend for a back to back team state appearance in 2018!
