Wolves Finish Season at IHSA Sectional Meet

On Saturday, October 29, 2016, the Oswego East Girls’ Cross Country Team competed at the IHSA West Aurora Sectional.  As a team, the Wolves placed 13th.  Naperville North won with 50 points, followed by Neuqua Valley (101), Geneva (105), Metea Valley (138), and Batavia (146).  The top 5 teams advanced to the IHSA State Meet next weekend, while Oswego East and the rest of the field finished their official team season.  For the Wolves, the finish was disappointing yet motivating.  The race was not the best performance of the year for most of the team, but it is a very necessary step forward and will mark great improvement from not qualifying and competing as a team in 2015.

Kendra Standish led the pack, finishing in 5th place in 19:32.  Alexis Henz was on her heels, finishing in 59th in 19:33.  Abby Flammersfeld was next, finishing in 66th in 19:48.  Next in was Amanda Bonczkowski in 20:08 (82nd), Isabella Gyori in 20:22 (88th), Morgan Ede in 20:53 (95th), and Elyssa Gall in 21:00 (99th).  Although it was not the finish the Wolves were hoping for or expecting, the experience of getting back to the Sectional Meet was crucial for this season and will be very beneficial in advancing to the IHSA State Meet in 2017.

From Coach Cook—Thank you for a great season!  Although I’m sure you would have wanted a different end to all the work you’ve put in, I know we are building a program and building distance runners I’m extremely proud of.  Thank you for all your hard work, and I look forward to building that confidence to get us to reach all our goals next season!

Oswego East Qualifies for the IHSA Sectional Meet!

We did enough to advance!  That was the conclusion after today’s race at the IHSA Batavia Regional.  After finishing just outside of the qualifying teams in 2015, the Oswego East Girls’ Cross Country Team finished in the 6th and final qualifying spot for the 2016 season.  Kendra Standish was the first to finish for Oswego East, crossing in 18:47 in 23rd place.  Next in was Amanda Bonczkowski in 19:00 and 29th place).  Alexis Henz finished in 19:03, finishing 30th.  Abby Flammersfeld and Isabella Gyori were not far behind, finishing in 19:24 (34th) and 19:41 (39th), respectively.  Morgan Ede finished in 19:46 (41st), and Elyssa Gall finished in 20:47 (48th), to close out the Oswego East team.

In the team results, Metea Valley and Neuqua Valley tied with 53 points, with Metea winning on the 6th runner criteria.  Batavia finished 3rd with 66 points, followed by Oswego with 75 points, Waubonsie Valley with 151 points, and Oswego East with 155 points.  East Aurora (186) and West Aurora (191) rounded out the rest of the field.

The Wolves were a bit underwhelmed with the team finish and how the race played out, but the important thing is they advanced to next week’s Sectional Meet.  Congrats to the girls for returning to the IHSA Sectional Meet as a qualifying TEAM!

Wolves Improve at SPC Conference!

On Saturday, October 15, 2016, the Oswego East Girls Cross Country Team improved to a top 4 finish at the SPC Conference Meet.  The meet featured 10 teams this year, as Joliet Central and Joliet West have joined the SPC for the first time this year.  Winning the Varsity race was Minooka with 25 points.  They were followed by Oswego with 71 and Plainfield North with 88.  Oswego East was 4th with 101, followed by Plainfield South with 112, Joliet West with 142, and Joliet Central with 212.  Plainfield East (218), Plainfield Central (255), and Romeoville (310) rounded out the 10-team field.

The Wolves were led by senior Alexis Henz, who earned All-Conference status with her 13th place finish in 18:57.  Abby Flammersfeld was also All-Conference with 18th place and her time of 19:22.  Amanda Bonczkowski had a great finish, but crossed the line just outside of the coveted top 18 spots, finishing 19th in 19:29.  Kendra Standish fought through adversity and crossed the line in 19:47 in 23rd place.  Freshman Morgan Ede was the 5th finisher for the Wolves in 20:02 in 28th place.  Isabella Gyori (30th place) and Elyssa Gall (36th place) were close behind, crossing in 20:06 and 20:22, respectively.  Overall the team ran well and battled hard.  Some factors were out of their control and made for a wild last 400 meters.  The goal of being in the top 3 teams was not realized, but the proximity to that goal with the way the day played out show a lot of progress and even more potential for the remaining weeks of the season.

In the Frosh/Soph race, the young runners ran like pros!  Minooka's pack was out fast, and the Wolves chased them down, moving up throughout the race.  In the end, Minooka won the team race with 22 points.  Oswego East finished 2nd with 45 points, distancing themselves from Oswego with 70 points.  Joliet Central (126), Joliet West (141), Plainfield North (167), Plainfield Central (194) and Plainfield East (217) rounded out the field, as only 8 of the 10 teams had 5 runners or more.  Leading the F/S team were Kara Webb (4th in 19:52), Katherine Sim (5th in 19:52), and Kitty Scheerenberger (6th in 20:00).  Kathleen Sim finished her sophomore season very strong, finishing in 13th place in 21:23, and Gabby DeBoer also earned a top 18 finish in 17th (21:59).  Becca Wolf (23rd in 22:13) and Meghan Murphy (25th in 22:29) rounded out the top 7, and ran amazing to get all 7 OE runners in the top 25.  This marks the second year in a row for the F/S team to take 2nd at the SPC Meet.  Great job, ladies!

In the Open race, the Wolves reached their top 3 team goal as well.  Although the race was not officially scored, the OE runners did their job to secure an unofficial 3rd place finish with 82 points.  Minooka scored 29 points, and Oswego scored 37, to finish ahead of the Wolves.  Plainfield North was 4th with 98.  Alyssa Nepereny and Rosie Lee led the team, finishing in the top ten and earning awards of their own.  Nepereny was 6th in 20:41, and Lee was 8th in 20:57.  Shannon Weizeorick was next in for the team, finishing in 26th place in 22:15.  Hannah Jaros (27th) crossed in 22:20, followed by Anna Stonehocker (30th) in 22:25, Alexandra Dillman (33rd) in 22:40, and Annie Sims (34th) in 22:40.  Natalie Lee finished in 39th in 22:54, followed by Emma McCullough in 40th in 22:57, Emma McKillip in 54th in 23:42, and Gaby Viano in 65th in 24:26.  The Wolves had all 11 runners in the top 65 of the 144-athlete race.

After a bit of a roller-coaster of a morning, the Oswego East Wolves showed a great deal of heart and determination across the board.  Great job to everyone!  We are very proud of the efforts of our entire team, and looking forward to what the next few weeks will bring for our varsity group!  All together tough together!

After talking "head to head racing" during the week, the Oswego East Wolves edged Plainfield South by one point in a dual on Tuesday, September 20, 2016.  Oswego East scored 27 points to Plainfield South's 28.  Alexis Henz was the first finisher, placing 2nd with 18:36.  Kendra Standish was 4th in 19:02, after taking a wrong turn and losing a substantial lead.  Isabella Gyori, Abby Flammersfeld, and Alyssa Nepereny closed out the top 5 for the Wolves.  Gyori was 5th in 19:16.  Flammersfeld was 6th in 20:00, and Nerepeny was 10th in 20:38.  Next in were Kara Webb in 11th (20:40), Kitty Scheerenberger in 14th (21:11), Annie Sims in 15th (21:36), and Hannah Janowski in 16th (21:55).  A huge improvement was made by Shannon Weizeorick, who is returning to her form after injury.  Weizeorick finished in 23rd in 22:38.  Oswego East celebrated the efforts of the graduating seniors:  Alexis Henz, Natalie Lee, Emma McCullough, and Annie Sims.

In one year, the Oswego East Girls' Cross Country Team improved by five team places at the First to The Finish Invite at the historic Detweiller Park in Peoria, Illinois.  In 2015, the Wolves placed 21st.  This time around, the team was just outside of the top 15 teams, placing 16th with 457 points.  The course, which is typically extremely flat and fast, was a mud pit on Saturday.  A fast race quickly turned into a technical race, navigating complete mud-covered turns at every corner of the course.  Alexis Henz led the team, placing 46th in 19:24.  She was closely followed by Kendra Standish in 19:28 (51st place).  Abby Flammersfeld was next in, placing 118th in 20:20.  The next group of runners finished in a tight group.  Amanda Bonczkowski was 132nd in 20:32, followed by Isabella Gyori in 20:35 (135th), Elyssa Gall in 20:39 (141st), Katherine Sim in 20:46 (147th), and Morgan Ede in 20:53 (157th).  Kara Webb was 17th in 21:12, and Kitty Scheerenberger was 197th in 21:30.  Naperville North won the meet with 81 points, followed by Yorkville with 82, Minooka with 118, Downers Grove South with 156, and New Trier with 168.  Many teams in the race were ranked in the top 25 in the state, with Oswego East finishing just behind those teams, and even beating 2 ranked teams as well.  All things considered, the Wolves navigated the sloppy course extremely well, but still look to close the gap in the races to come.
