Earth Science Trimester One Course Syllabus
Unit One: Patterns in the Solar System
- You will be able to explain patterns of the sun, moon, and stars as seen from Earth, monthly patterns of the moon, and eclipses.
- You will be able to explain how Earth's shape, tilt, and orbit around the sun cause the seasons of the year.
Unit Two: The Solar System and Universe
- You will be able to provide evidence for how the solar system formed.
- You will be able to use evidence to explain the current scientific model of Earth's place in the solar system.
- You will be able to explain how scientists use data and models to determine the structure of galaxies and the universe.
- You will be able to explain the role of gravity in the universe.
Unit Three: The Dynamic Earth
- You will investigate how the processes of weathering, erosion, and deposition have shaped Earth's surface.
- You will be able to describe the processes that form various types of rock and how they involve the cycling of matter and the flow of energy.
- You will be able to analyze data to provide evidence for plate tectonics.
- You will be able to explain how geologic processes have shaped Earth's surface.
Unit Four: Earth Through Time
- You will be able to explain how scientists determine the ages of Earth's rocks and fossils.
- You will be able to explain how evidence is used to organize Earth's history into the geologic time scale.
