Yearbook 2021-22

Welcome! Yearbook is a creative and cooperative endeavor. We are all here to work together to create a masterpiece.

Basic Expectations

  • Do your best

  • Ask for help

  • Be responsible

  • Be Respectful

  • Deadlines are non-negotiable

Grades

  • 20% - Photo Assignments – you must complete three outside-of-class photo assignments during the trimester. There will be sign-up lists, plus other opportunities that pop up

  • 10% - Ad sales - students must sell at least one ad for the yearbook. Extra sales are extra credit.

  • 60% - Deadlines – You will be in charge of completing an assigned spread for each deadline. This includes placing photos, writing captions & headlines; writing stories, etc. There will be a deadline night for each deadline where you will be expected to stay after school until your spread is complete. If your spread is signed off before deadline night, you will be excused from deadline night. Make sure you have cleared ANY conflicts from your calendar for deadline night.

  • 10% - General Assignments – there will be assignments in class that help you learn how to do the interviews, layouts, photography, etc. For editors, this will include our weekly morning meetings.

Equipment checkout

  • If you check out any equipment, it must be properly checked out and properly checked in. Any equipment checked out that is not returned the next day in good working condition, with all of its components (batteries, SD cards, extra lenses…) will be your responsibility to pay for.

Ad Sales

Yearbook Ads

Ads help keep the cost of producing our book down and capture a unique view of our community for future generations. We sell on average just fewer than 1000 books which puts your ad in the hands of not only students, but parents and family members of those who purchase the book.

Purchasers may submit their own art work or completed ad, or they can give us the pieces and have us assemble your ad for them.

Full Page $200 8x10

½ Page $125 8x5

¼ Page $ 75 4x5

1/8 Page $ 50 4x2 ½

Purchasers make checks out to HHS Yearbook. They can e-mail content to highland.id.yearbbook@gmail.com, submit it on a digital storage device, or send a hard copy to be scanned.

Welcome Letter to Parents

Dear Parents/Guardians of yearbook students,

I am excited to welcome your student into yearbook class this year. I am looking forward to a “normal” school year after all of the excitement last year. In our yearbook class students will be learning the basics of using Adobe's PhotoShop and InDesign programs. They will have the opportunity to become Adobe certified in these programs if they are with us in the third trimester. They will learn how to use DSLR cameras and how to take well-framed action shots and candids for use in the yearbook. They will conduct interviews, complete layouts, and write stories for the different spreads in the book.

We have a wonderful editorial board this year who attended yearbook camp in Utah in June and came away with multiple prizes, including the top $1,500 overall award for best theme package, copywriting, and design.

Introducing our 2021-2022 editors:

Editor in Chief: Briley Anderson. Briley is a senior and has three years experience on staff, including sports editor, photo editor, and managing editor. Briley walked away with second place in caption writing at camp this year and she has been recognized as one of the top ten student photographers in the nation by Business Professionals of America. She is also Adobe certified in both PhotoShop and InDesign.

Managing Editors: Jaylee Crum and Emmalynn Packard. Jaylee will also be editing the People section of the book this year and Emmalynn will be editing the Student Life section. Jaylee is a senior and brings three years of experience on staff including time as Ads editor. Emmalynn is a junior, has two years experience on staff, and is in her first year as an editor. Both Emmalynn and Jaylee were part of the team that took home prizes in story package writing, layout design, and theme package design at yearbook camp.

Section Editors: Brynlee Fehringer is a sophomore and will be our sports editor. Mercedes Frey and Hazel Nunez are also both sophomores, and they will work together as our clubs editors. Abbie Summers, sophomore, will be our ads editor this year.

Expectations:

Students will be assigned spreads to complete. A spread is two facing-pages in the book. For example, they might have the Drama Club spread, or the Girls Varsity Soccer spread. Students will conduct interviews, gather photos, and write the captions and stories for their spread. During the trimester they will be expected to attend and take pictures of at least three school events (these do not have to be the same as their assigned spread). On deadline days, a student who does not finish their assigned spread before the end of class is expected to stay after school until it is complete. Most spreads are able to be completed prior to the deadline if class time is used well, but students should make sure to keep deadline dates available and not schedule themselves to work or be elsewhere just in case they will need to remain at school to finish. Our first deadline night will be October 4, 2021. Keep in mind that there is no late work accepted regarding deadlines. If a student doesn’t complete their spread in time, their editor will have to finish it in order to get it sent in to the publishers.

Equipment:

Students may check out a camera after school on the day of their photo assignments. They must properly check in the camera the following school day before school begins. They are never to leave the camera in a locker or a car or anywhere unattended. Students are responsible for the replacement cost of a lost or damaged camera that was in their care.

Homework:

Outside of photo assignments, there is generally no homework for this class. However, students will be given access to the programs through Adobe to be able to work on their spreads at home if they desire.

Final thoughts:

Editors will work closely with each student to help make this a successful experience for them and for the entire staff. We all work together to help everyone succeed. Questions and requests for assistance are encouraged. Education is a partnership with parents and I hope you will contact me with any questions you have regarding the class and the expectations. I also welcome any insights into your child that may help me better facilitate their learning in my class. You can contact me at grecode@sd25.us

Here’s to a wonderful school year!
