In this activity, students will watch video snippets to make observations about how the world of water (hydrosphere) interacts with the the worlds of rocks and soil (geosphere), plants and animals (biosphere), and air and wind (atmosphere).
Where is water in the videos and how does it connect to other parts of the Earth system?
Students will be able to define hydrosphere, geosphere, biosphere, and atmosphere.
Students will be able to recognize water in a natural setting, even when it is not visible.
Student will be able to apply their understanding of Earth systems to explain connections.
Internet access to YouTube and projector with speakers so everyone can see and hear the video.
Handouts of hydrosphere connections.
This activity does not require any supplies from the Online Water Festival Trunk
Tell students they are going to do an activity about how water interacts with rocks, soil, plants, animals, air and wind. Explain they are going to watch a video and follow along in the classroom.
Show them on a map where Badlands National Park is.
Start the video.
Pause the video at 5:12 to distribute handouts.
Pause the video at 8:34 to review the handouts for Earth systems connections you saw in the video. Discuss your ideas with classmates before resuming
Pause the video at 10:58 to review the handouts for Earth systems connections you saw in the video. Discuss your ideas with classmates before resuming.
Pause the video at 13:24 to review the handouts for Earth systems connections you saw in the video. Discuss your ideas with classmates before resuming.
Pause the video at 15:40 to review the handouts for Earth systems connections you saw in the video. Discuss your ideas with classmates before resuming.
Have students make their own videos and identify the Earth systems interactions. Note: students can use their hands to frame a video camera and describe what they are seeing.
Science: 5-ESS2-1 Develop a model to describe the interaction of geosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, and/or atmosphere.
