Life at Arden is not all about the subjects that you study. Alongside the curriculum we offer a range of support and opportunities to enhance your experience and help you to move on to whatever you want to do after sixth form. Taking part in co-curricular activities is actively encouraged as it helps to develop social skills, as well as giving you the soft skills which are essential to higher education and the world of work. Below are some examples of activities you could take part in, as well as a glimpse into some of the support we offer.
The CCF at SCWA is a Royal Marines Section. As such it is one of only 21 schools in the whole of the United Kingdom that is able to offer the Royal Marines training experience to school students.
The DofE programme allows young people to have fun, make friends, improve their self-esteem and build confidence. They gain essential skills and attributes for work and life such as resilience, problem-solving, team-working, communication and drive, enhancing CVs and uni and job applications.
Young Enterprise and Young Money give young people the life skills, knowledge and confidence they need to succeed in the changing world of work .
SCWA is in the unique position to benefit hugely from a wealth of opportunities offered by our Trustees, The Worshipful Company of Stationers and Newspaper Makers. Stationers volunteer their time to provide governance, resources, professional expertise, mentoring, careers advice and work experience placements.
We run a Stationers’ Mentoring Programme which is aimed specifically at Sixth Form students. Following a recruitment and networking event, students enrolled on the scheme benefit from one-to-one meetings with an allocated leading expert. The programme aims to develop self-confidence, self-belief and self-awareness, raise aspirations, allow students to access career pathway advice from a business professional and experience what life is like in the working world. This is a fantastic opportunity for Sixth Form students.
Sixth form is all about next steps and setting a path for your future career. We have a rolling programme of events and activities dedicated to this, including trips to UCAS and apprenticeship fairs and external speakers from universities and the world of work. We closely support students applying to university by giving 1-2-1 help and guidance with the UCAS application and assist those wishing to take the apprenticeship route with CV writing workshops, interview practice and networking events. We also register all of our students with Globalbridge and UniFrog which both provide bespoke support and help connect students to pathways of interest. Our tutors deliver materials throughout the year and offer assistance with practical steps such as applying to courses, writing a personal statement and filling out application forms.

The vast majority of our students leave sixth form to take up a place at university. Our most popular subjects studied at university are Law and Business. Medicine, Biomedical Science and Engineering are all popular choices for our Science students whilst many of our Health and Social Care students go on to study Nursing, Midwifery and Social Work degrees. Media, Film, Art and Design students successfully apply to study at Ravensbourne University and Art Colleges such as Central St Martin’s and Camberwell College of Arts. Jobs and apprenticeships are the choice for the rest of our students, with our most recent students securing places on Level 4 and 5 apprenticeships; in a range of companies including EasyJet, Guy Carpenter, Legendre UK, Binder Birch Owen, Access Insurance and The Fashion Retail Academy.
‘Arden prepared me for university by giving me a positive mental attitude towards study. Through the workload of homework and classwork, I became more adapted to coping with the more arduous tasks of university. Moreover, I learnt important skills such as team work and being able to persevere in times of adversity. My advice is to use free periods wisely, make notes and revise recent topics; use past papers; ensure you take advantage of homework and additional lessons and use them to your benefit.’
