This is my 22nd year at Sutter Middle--the best job I could ever imagine! I taught 7th and 8th grade CORE for the first eight years and have been teaching Art since--IT'S SO MUCH FUN! Before becoming a teacher, I was a nanny, a picture framer, a waitress, a poster shipper, a receptionist and a grocery clerk. Those were all fun jobs, but teaching Art is THE BEST.
Every year I get to change up my curriculum to fit my students' interests (I hope:), to improve and invent new lessons, to incorporate new things I've learned and address current issues in art and the world! And OF COURSE, I incorporate as many of the middle school Visual Arts standards as time and good teaching allows! This year we will be focusing on really developing our voices and skills in a variety of drawing media, utilizing the Principles of Design with understanding and invention, and learning about some exciting art movements and groundbreaking artists! And we will be exploring ways creative people can and do help move humanity forward!
I grew up primarily in Quincy, California and Olympia, Washington. Our family moved a lot growing up, which definitely kept life interesting! I continued that trend in my 20s and early 30s, living in Seattle, Portland and Ashland, Oregon, San Francisco and LA. I really enjoy my life in Sacramento, but colder climates call to me...I love rain and snow!
I have one sister, Sionann (the Irish spelling for Shannon--pronounced the same). She is 4 years older and lives in Normandy, France in a beautiful little country town named Cerisy-la-Foret (Cherry of the Forest). She has lived and worked in France for most of her adult life, working as a translator for film and tv. We try to spend a month or so together every year, either over here or over there. We love to go to concerts, swim and travel together, and slug around watching movies.
My dad, Jaime, is a retired community college teacher, expert salad maker and writer. My mom, Karen, is a retired social worker, recent cancer survivor and artist! They live in Sacramento now, having lost their home in the Camp Fire two years ago--a silver lining after a rough few years! I love having them nearby.
As I am happily single and kidless, my friends and their kids are my extended family. I'm also really fortunate to have some terrific friends on staff at school--it's such a wonderful place to work!
My cats have always been good about foster kittens. Sadly, they weren't as happy when I got Roxy, my first and probably last foster dog, as much as I loved her. The cats, not so much--this moment of peace was rare. I have yet to try fostering chickens, but I have gotten to know many at Animal Place Rescue Ranch and in my sister's backyard<3
Clockwise from top left--Permacats Steve in his fort, Lenny DL teaching last year, Knuckles preparing to break something, Juliet and her foster kitten doppleganger, Speedy, me and Atticus, my former feral who lived in my attic for 3 years before he let me pet him, and a wombat.
