88.9/WSTB is a broadcast FM radio station that covers the Greater Akron area from Wadsworth to Youngstown and Canton to Cleveland. We broadcast 24/7/365 and according to national radio ratings, over 35,000 people tune in each week to listen to "Northeast Ohio’s Best Alternative Rock" Monday through Saturday and rock 'n' roll oldies from the 1950s, 60s, and 70s on the Sunday Oldies Jukebox.
The Introduction to Radio class is designed to provide an overview of broadcasting in America as well as on-air experience. The class begins with an overview of WSTB history beginning with the issuance of the station’s FCC license in 1972. After that students learn about radio sales and marketing, audience ratings, how to analyze a broadcast market for acceptable formats and activities, ethics in broadcasting and news, FCC broadcast rules, and the development of rock music in America. The knowledge gained in the class not only provides students with the necessary tools to be on staff, but also provides life skills that can be used in a variety of occupations including business, marketing, and sales.
