LT Kleinsmith, daughter of Paul and Marilyn Crowley, was born in Hull, Massachusetts, on 21 December 1968. She graduated from Lake Elsinore High School, Elsinore, CA, in June 1987. LT Kleinsmith enlisted in the U.S. Navy under the Delayed Entry Program in November 1986. In September 1987, she attended boot camp at RTC Orlando, Florida, graduating in November. She attended OS “A” School at Dam Neck. VA. In March 1988, she graduated with honors, resulting in meritorious advancement to OS3 six months after being transferred to the USS Jason (AR-8). In 1988 she was advanced to OS2 and shortly afterwards she was assigned TAD to the Ship’s Master-at-Arms Office.
In 1990, then Petty Officer Kleinsmith was selected for conversion to the Master-at-Arms rating and transferred to the USS Cape Cod(AD-43), after attending the Master-at-Arms Conversion Course in Ft. Mcclallan, AL. After attending the Navy Correction Specialist Course, she was assigned as the USS Cape Cod’s Brig Supervisor. She was advanced to MA1 in the spring of 1990.
In August 1992, she transferred to Supreme Allied Command Atlantic (SACLANT), Norfolk, VA., where she was assigned as the Leading Petty Officer of the Security Department.
In August 1994, Petty Officer Kleinsmith transferred to Shore Immediate Activity (SIMA), Norfolk, VA, where she was assigned as the Command Investigator for the Chief Master-at-Arms Office.In May 1996, she accepted orders to be a part of the Pre-Commissioning Crew of PCD Bataan (LHD-5), which was being built in Pasacula, Mississippi. As part of the Master-at-Arms Office, she was placed in charge of the Pre-Commissioning Barracks. While assigned to the Pre-Commissioning Unit, she was advanced to Chief Petty Officer. In May 1997, she was transferred to Pasacula, Mississippi to assist with the final phase of the pre-commissioning of the ship and was part of the Commissioning Ceremony. Her initial assignment onboard the USS Bataan was as the Commander, Shipboard Security Defense Force. She was then assigned as the Chief Master-at-Arms and Brig Supervisor during the ship’s Maiden Voyage to the Mediterranean Sea in 1999-2000. In March 2000, then Chief Kleinsmith transferred to Naval Security Force, Bahrain, where she served as Operations Chief, DoDDS/Physical Security LCPO, Operations Officer, and Administrative LCPO. Chief Kleinsmith was selected for Limited Duty Officer in March 2001.
On 01 October 2001, Chief Kleinsmith was commissioned under the Limited Duty Officer Program as an Ensign in the United States Navy. Upon completion of the LDO Indoctrination Course, Ensign Kleinsmith reported to NAS Keflavik, Iceland as the Installation Security/AT Officer. During this tour, she also performed the duties as the Security Department Head. In July 2004, LT Kleinsmith transferred to NCIS STAAT Bahrain, where she was assigned to the Port Integrated Vulnerability Assessment Team. Upon completion of this tour, she was transferred to the NCIS Mayport Field Office, where she performed the duties as the lead STAAT PIVA Assessor, as well as being sole Post Validation/Staffing Standards Coordinator for Field Office. She also was assigned as the Senior Military Liaison Officer for the four NCIS Field Offices located in the Southeast Region.
In January 2007, LT Kleinsmith transferred to NSA Bahrain, where she was assigned as the Installation’s Security Officer/Security Department Head. In March 2008, LT Kleinsmith reported to CNRSE, Jacksonville, FL., where she retired from active duty in 2012.
In August of 2014, LT Kleinsmith was hired by the Suwannee County School District as the Suwannee High School Senior Naval Science Instructor, overseeing all facets of the NJROTC Program.
LT Kleinsmith is authorized to wear the Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist and Enlisted Air Warfare Specialist pins, Navy Commendation Medal (silver star), Joint Service Achievement Medal, and Navy Achievement Medal (2 stars) among others.
LT Kleinsmith earned her Bachelor of Art in Security Management (with a Minor in Middle East Studies) in June 2006 from American Military University. She earned her Masters of Art in Public Administration (with a concentration in Emergency Management) from American Military University in June 2013. She also earned a Certificate of Homeland Security and a Certificate in Emergency Management through FCCJ (Jacksonville) in 2012.
LT Kleinsmith is married to Lance O. Kleinsmith of Wheatland, Iowa and they currently live in McAlpin, Fl. Lance is also retired from the U.S. Navy.
