Application Process
The Southwest Virginia Healthcare Excellence Academy Lab School (HEALS) is a grant-funded Lab School established under the Virginia State Board of Education and the Virginia Department of Education. As such, HEALS must follow the guidelines established for Lab Schools. The HEALS program is open to any student in the Commonwealth of Virginia but the targeted student population is from our partnering school divisions. There are limited seats available each year and the final decision on acceptance into the program when the number of applicants exceeds the number of available seats is through a lottery. The information provided in the application process outlined below may be used to assist in determining eligible students.
1) Students will need to click the link below and complete the online "Student Application"
The application will require written responses on the following two topics:
a) Please provide a brief description of any healthcare experience or education. Experience and education can include activities such as camps, observations, jobs, course work, volunteering, clubs, or other extra-curricular activities, or personal experiences.
b) Explain why you wish to participate in the Healthcare Excellence Academy Lab School.
Please compose the essays in a document prior to starting the online application.
2) Parents or Guardians will need to complete the online "Parental/Guardian Consent" form. This link can also be found below.
3) Each application must also include three "School Recommendation" forms completed by three separate teachers, counselors or school administrators on behalf of the student.
4) The school counselor will also need to upload a PDF copy of the student's transcripts and SOL Scores to the "Transcripts/SOL Upload" form below.
This part of the application needs to be completed by the student's legal parent or guardian.
Each student needs to have three recommendation forms submitted by three separate counselors, admins or teachers.
The counselor will need to complete this section by uploading two separate files: one for the student's transcript and the second for the student's historical SOL testing scores. We do recommend that these be PDF files. Each file must also be smaller than 10 MB.
