Student Recognition System

As part of Tier 1, it is essential to encourage students to follow the identified expectations every day. The best way to get students to continue to engage in appropriate behavior, is by creating a school-wide acknowledgment system. The purpose of a school-wide acknowledgment system is to provide all staff with the means to acknowledge those students who are displaying positive behaviors. By pairing the acknowledgment (i.e., praise) with the delivery of an earned reward, students are more likely to engage in those recognized, desired behaviors more often. To be effective and gain student buy-in, all staff must participate in acknowledging students for following the school-wide expectations.

Students at Scotts Valley Middle school can earn ICARE tickets when they are caught by a staff member displaying Integrity, Compassion, Achievement, Respect or Engagement at school. This is a school-wide effort to recognize positive behavior in class and around campus

How does the process work?

A staff member observes a student displaying one of the behaviors outlined on the expectations matrix or another positive behavior in school. The staff members gives an ICARE card to the student and lets them know which ICARE behavior they are displaying.

The student brings their ICARE ticket to the office. The ticket is torn so that the “I” portion goes into a raffle for a monthly pizza party. The “CARE” portion goes into a box to vote for which charity gets the biggest donation each trimester. The charities were voted on by students and staff and will change yearly. The donation amount will be divided up between the three charities based on votes.
