As part of Tier 1, it is essential to encourage students to follow the identified expectations every day. The best way to get students to continue to engage in appropriate behavior is by creating a school-wide acknowledgment system. The purpose of a school-wide acknowledgment system is to provide all staff with the means to acknowledge those students who are displaying positive and expected behaviors. By pairing the acknowledgment (i.e., praise) with the delivery of an earned reward, students are more likely to engage in those recognized, desired behaviors more often. To be effective and gain student buy-in, all staff must participate in acknowledging students for following the school-wide expectations.
At Brook Knoll, students are presented with Eagle Feathers from teachers and staff if they are showing kindness, respect, or responsibility. Those Eagle Feathers are turned into the office for a drawing to have their name said in the weekly announcements. Both students and staff are recognized. A charitable donation is also tied to the Eagle Feathers. There are boxes outside the library where students select a charity to put their Eagle Feather into; each Eagle Feather represents a set monetary value and at the end of the year, an anonymous donor donates the total value to each separate charity. Each classroom also has its own unique acknowledgement system, often decided upon collaboratively within the classroom's social contract.
In addition to Eagle Feathers, Brook Knoll also has ACARE (All Children Are Really Exceptional) awards. ACARE awards are given out at monthly assemblies that reflect the monthly character trait. Similarly, there are monthly school-wide outdoor assemblies (each hosted by a specific grade level) that are themed to align with PBIS.
