Tuesday, September 8:
In class: The class began to read and discuss Ch. 12-13 of Shane. We also began working on Lesson to Learn A, which focusing on transitive verbs and direct objects.

Wednesday, September 9:
In class: The class worked on writing a descriptive paragraph - mimicking the style of Jack Schaefer. We also briefly began taking notes on subject complements.

Thursday, September 10:
In class: The class finished taking notes on subject complements. We then read and discussed Ch. 14 (the climax!) of Shane.

Friday, September 11:
In class: The class finished reading and discussing Shane Ch. 15-16. Though we have now finished the book, we will still require it next week for a seminar and an essay. We also began working on Lesson to Learn B, which introduced subject complements.
Homework: Shane Socratic Discussion Questions due Tuesday - we will have our first seminar that day.

In class: The class worked through descriptive writing exercises - focusing specifically on incorporating metaphor and simile.

In class: The class completed an exercise over appropriate usage of apostrophes. We then reviewed LGR Unit 3 in preparation for tomorrow's test. We then began taking notes over predicate verbs and direct objects.

In class: The class read and discussed the rest of Ch. 11 of Shane. They then took the Unit 3 LGR Test and practiced descriptive writing.

In class: The class will be taking the ELA MAP Test - a standardized test used to help Middle School students prepare for state testing at the end of the year.

In class: The class reviewed yesterday's grammar practice test and began working on Lesson to Learn C. We discussed Ch. 7 of Shane and began reading Ch. 8.

In class: The class worked on a descriptive writing exercises that focused on Shane's introduction in the novel. We continued working on Lesson to Learn C in preparation for Tuesday's grammar test, and we began to read and discuss Ch. 9 of Shane.

In class: The class previewed Unit 2 of LGR. We began to read and discuss Ch. 4 of Shane - we will finish it together tomorrow (not HW to finish).

In class: The class finished reading and discussing Ch. 4 of Shane before beginning the next set of grammar notes (over subject and predicate).

In class: We began our first composition unit today., which focuses on descriptive writing. We are using passages from Shane to guide our own writing.

In class: We reviewed the Unit 2 LGR exercises in preparation for tomorrow's test. We began working through the Lesson to Learn B worksheet. Lastly, we began to read and discuss Ch. 5 of Shane.

Friday, August 21:
In class: The class took their Unit 2 LGR Test. We completed Lesson to Learn B - focusing on how to correctly quote the 4 kinds of sentences. Lastly, we began to read and discuss Ch. 6 of Shane.
Homework: Finish reading Ch. 6 if necessary.
Thursday, August 6:
In class: The class discussed the adage "You reap what you sow" and began to review classroom expectations. We also reviewed the class syllabus (see HW).
Homework: Sign and return syllabus (there will be a short quiz over it tomorrow). Bring materials for grammar binder. Bring copy of Shane.

Friday, August 7:
In class: We took an open-note quiz on the syllabus and continued discussing classroom expectations. We also set up our grammar binders - it is vital that the students have a dedicated binder for grammar instruction; we will begin taking notes in it next week.

Monday, August 10:
In class: The class set academic goals for the semester. We then distributed the vocabulary books (LGR, which stands for Latin and Greek Roots) and went over Unit 1. Previewing the LGR words will be a weekly occurrence on Monday. The students have until Thursday to complete the unit's exercises at which point I grade them and we review the exercises as a class in preparation for Friday's test. I explained to the class that the LGR words are cumulative. Additional class time was spent discussing what we know about westerns in preparation for reading Shane tomorrow.
Homework: LGR Unit 1 due Thursday.

In class: We took notes on the 4 Kinds of Sentences and established how our grammar binders will be used moving forward. We began to read and discuss Ch. 1 of Shane.

In class: We began class with a quick review of the 8 Parts of Speech - the students know they will be quizzed on them next week. We spent the majority of class reading and discussing Ch. 1 of Shane.

In class: We reviewed this week's LGR words in preparation for tomorrow's test. We began to read and discuss Ch. 2 of Shane.

In class: The class finished reading and discussing Ch. 2 of Shane and completed their Lesson to Learn A. We had our first LGR test of the year - the "tests" are typically quite short (about 5-10 minutes). The remainder of class was spent reading and discussing Ch. 3 of Shane.
