Xylophone and Instrument Rules
■ “You play it, you lose it.” I frequently remind kids they may only play when I tell them to. Otherwise, they are making noise, not music.
○ Have a few students play on xylophones (6 instruments?)
○ Print out paper xylophones for other students to practice on
○ Warm Ups
■ “Say and play” name notes up the scale in a rhythmic pattern and students play (back down ta ta ta-ah)
■ echo “tippy tippy ti ti ta” whisper it and have mallets match in the air then play on marimba and goal play with everyone else
■ Go up the scale each note as quarter note and play together, use two mallets, one for each note.

There are many others and many variations of the above but these are the main brass instruments.
Brass instruments make sound by buzzing their lips which vibrates the air inside.
Valves act as junctions that divert the air to different tubing in the instrument, essentially lengthening the
instrument.
Before valves were invented, brass players had to only rely on the tension of their lips to change pitch and
were limited as to what notes they could play.
