How to hang Chandelier &
Pendant Lights
Height for hanging a pendant light
If you are hanging a pendant light above a kitchen island, the distance between the bottom of the fixture and the surface should be between 30"- 36". Determine whether your pendants will serve as accent lighting or general lighting in the kitchen.
Islands that are 4-6 feet long, will do well with one large or two medium size pendants. larger islands can handle two larger or three medium size pendants. When hanging multiple fixtures, the recommended spacing is about 24" apart. But again your personal preference for spacing should be considered.
As a general rule, if your ceilings are 8' you should hang the fixture closer to 30" from the surface. With taller ceilings hanging the fixture higher is acceptable. Keep in mind the view you want to maintain when hanging the fixture. Make sure that your line of sight is not impeded by the fixture. If the fixture is above a kitchen island, consider that your fixture should not hang lower than the eye height of the tallest person in the home. No one wants to continually look under or around a light fixture to talk with other people.
Hanging a Chandelier or Pendant above a Dining Room Table
Choose a lighting fixture that compliments your home's design aesthetics. There are many to choose from.
When hanging the fixture, the general rule of thumb is to hang the fixture 36" (3 feet) above the table or 72" (6 feet) off the floor. Keep in mind that rules can be broken. Some people may consider this too low and choose to raise this height. This is perfectly acceptable. Remember, choose whatever fits your personal style and preference.
To test your desired fixture length, try hanging a balloon with a string from your ceiling. This will allow you to look at the positioning from all angles to determine what you will be satisfied with.
