ES Implementation Case Study: Salinas Union High School District
This presentation will describe the early stages of a project that supports the Salinas Union High School District in localizing its Ethnic Studies curriculum by democratizing archival materials; fostering civic action through participatory action research projects; creating critical service learning and ES pipelines between the local high schools and the local public state university; and finally, creating meaningful partnerships that bridge school and community contexts. In this project local educators, community organizers, students, and artists with substantial Ethnic Studies expertise work with classroom teachers to develop, document, and assess a localized Ethnic Studies curriculum and praxis.
Promising Ethnic Studies Pedagogies: Co-constructing Narratives to Affirm and Heal
The purpose of this session is to introduce promising pedagogies in Ethnic Studies. Participants discuss practices that center the voices of communities of color and create affirming classroom cultures including counternarratives, naming, and healing. Key pedagogies like reflection, restorative circles, and meditation will be modeled.
Teacher Identity in the Ethnic Studies Classroom
In this session I intend to describe teacher positionality in relation to the many intersecting identities of their students, and how this impacts instruction in a High School Ethnic Studies classroom.

This is an essential and do-able practice in an Ethnic Studies class. Learn tools and key factors for developing this practice.

We will think about how to bring an Ethnic Studies course full circle and for all of us to begin the work of understanding our role in relation to historical forces.

Santa Ana Unified School District passed the Ethnic Studies Graduation Requirement 1.5 years a head of the State with a 1 year course requirement. We are in the process of creating pathways for students who can take Ethnic Studies courses throughout their middle and high school years. Foundational frameworks, raining and coaching are critical to implementing and effective Ethnic Studies program.
