SAFETY
There is some risk inherent to an outdoor education experience; therefore, for the safety of everyone, please adhere to the following:
Clothing: Students are requested to wear comfortable, closed-toe footwear for walking and taking small hikes. Sandals or flip flops are not allowable due to safety protocols. Students should also wear long pants and dress in layers as it can be cooler in the morning and warmer in the afternoon.
Boundaries: All activities have specific boundaries; all participants are expected to understand what those boundaries are and follow specific directions provided by SCOE activity leaders. River Bend is home to poison oak, rattlesnakes, ticks, and other off-trail hazards that we want students, teachers, and volunteers to avoid. This is a very important issue for all participants.
River: No students are allowed in the river at any time There are NO exceptions. Students may choose to return to the American River Parkway on their own time with their families and enjoy all the recreational activities the parkway has to offer.
WATER/SNACK/LUNCH
Water: all participants are asked to bring a FULL water bottle for the morning. Please, no soda or sports drinks. One bottle of water will be provided for each student as needed free of charge.
Snack: a healthy snack will be provided to all participants free of charge. Please advise SCOE prior to the day of the field trip with any food related allergies.
Lunch: SCOE will not provide lunch or supervision at the conclusion of the activities (approximately 12:30pm). If your group stays to have lunch at the picnic tables, please plan to provide appropriate supervision, develop procedures for keeping lunches cool, and ensure that all trash and garbage is properly disposed.
CHAPERONES/ADULT EXPECTATIONS
SCOE requires sufficient school/district-qualified adults attend each session/activity to maintain a minimum 10:1 student to adult ratio. For example, if you are a class of 34 students, you will need a teacher and two other properly Camp User screened adults to help with supervision in addition to the SCOE teacher. This is critical for student safety. Please have all adults listen to and follow all directions given to students. Remember, student safety is our number one priority!
RESTROOMS
Please encourage students to use the restroom at school before they begin their travels to the park. There will be portable restrooms available for use at the River Bend Park site. Hand sanitizer will be available outside of the restrooms.
CAMERA/MEDIA
Please refer to your school district’s media policy for information regarding photographs and other media forms.
INSECT REPELLENT AND/OR SUNSCREEN
Insect repellent and sunscreen are not supplied. If a student desires or requires insect repellent or sunscreen, they should plan to come to school with it already applied.
RAIN GEAR
We encourage all participants to bring their own appropriate rainproof coats/jackets. Rain protection will be provided to students if needed.
