Sewing and textiles introduces students to a variety of different fabrics and textiles and their uses. Students will learn how to select and prepare fabrics, follow patterns, learn different sewing techniques, and apply these skills to complete their own sewing projects.
Designed to help students build the necessary skills and strategies needed to face life’s challenges. Students will learn to make choices about caring for themselves, jobs, emergencies, cooking, sewing, laundry and career preparation through class projects and simulation activities.
Food and Nutrition is designed to teach nutrition requirements and food preparation skills to meet those requirements. Students will learn cooking terms, kitchen utensils and equipment, safety and sanitation procedures while exploring a variety of ingredients and different cooking and baking methods.
JH FCS 7/8 is a one-semester Family and Consumer Sciences course designed to help students develop practical skills for everyday life, school, home, and future careers. Students participate in hands-on learning in personal development, health and wellness, nutrition, food preparation and kitchen safety, sewing and textiles, clothing care, home management and safety, family communication, consumer skills, budgeting, and independent living. The course emphasizes responsibility, decision-making, problem solving, teamwork, leadership, safe work habits, and career awareness through practical activities and performance-based projects.
Independent Study provides students with the opportunity to prepare for college by completing approved online college courses offered through colleges and postsecondary institutions. Students work independently on their assigned online coursework while receiving support, guidance, and monitoring from the teacher as needed.
Throughout the course, students are expected to demonstrate responsibility, independence, time management, organization, problem-solving, and appropriate use of technology and academic resources. Students are responsible for keeping up with online lessons, assignments, projects, quizzes, tests, and other course requirements established by the college or institution providing the course.
Students will monitor their academic progress, meet required deadlines, communicate appropriately with their online instructors, and seek assistance when necessary. The Independent Study teacher will provide a structured environment where students can work productively and develop effective study habits.
The course is designed to help students successfully complete college-level or college-preparatory coursework for credit while developing the independence, self-discipline, and academic skills necessary for the transition from high school to college and future career opportunities.
Independent Study provides students with the opportunity to explore an area of interest within Family and Consumer Sciences through individualized, self-directed learning. Students will work with the teacher to establish learning goals, develop a plan, manage their time, and complete projects or activities related to their chosen area of study.
Students may explore topics such as food and nutrition, sewing and textiles, personal finance, career preparation, family and relationships, child development, consumer skills, home management, or other approved FCS topics.
Throughout the course, students are expected to demonstrate responsibility, independence, problem-solving, time management, and appropriate use of resources. Students will document their progress and demonstrate their learning through projects, portfolios, presentations, reflections, or other approved assessments.
The course encourages students to take ownership of their learning while developing practical skills that can be applied to school, careers, home, and everyday life.
Math Life Skills is a practical mathematics course designed to help students develop essential math skills needed for everyday life and greater independence. The course focuses on applying mathematics to real-world situations such as counting and using money, making purchases, calculating change, comparing prices, budgeting, telling time, using measurements, understanding fractions and percentages, rounding numbers, and solving basic everyday math problems.
Instruction is individualized according to student ability and includes guided practice, repetition, visual supports, hands-on activities, worksheets, and real-life scenarios. The goal is to build students’ confidence, accuracy, problem-solving skills, and ability to use mathematics independently at home, at school, in the workplace, and in the community.
