🌸 In Loving Memory of Joy Lee Co-Artistic Director, Sydney Chamber Music Project
“Her life was a symphony of kindness, vision and music.”
We are deeply saddened to share that Joy Lee, our beloved Co-Artistic Director, passed away peacefully in 2025.
Joy’s life was a beautiful blend of artistry, mentorship, and quiet strength. After completing her studies in Europe and Great Britain, she returned to Australia and began a distinguished career as a violist with the Opera Orchestra, playing during the historic opening of the Sydney Opera House — a moment of national pride and artistic promise.
Her passion for music education shaped generations of young musicians. As Head of Strings across the three Sydney Grammar Schools and founder of the Alastair Mackerras Chamber Orchestra (AMCO), Joy helped lay the foundation for what would become a lifelong commitment to nurturing musical talent.
Joy was the inaugural president of AUSTA NSW, a long-serving Artistic Director of the Sydney Youth Orchestra Association, and an AMEB Examiner, roles she carried with wisdom, humility, and an unwavering belief in young artists.
Her influence reached across institutions and countries. She served in the String Department at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, led the Preparatory Division at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, directed the Young Musicians Program at the Australian Institute of Music, and helped found Young ANAM in Melbourne and the Rising Stars Program at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music in 2009.
In 2024, Joy became Co-Artistic Director of the Sydney Chamber Music Project, bringing her warmth, depth and vision to our program. Her presence brought something special to every rehearsal, every concert and every conversation.
Although Joy has left us, the music, wisdom and love she shared will live on in every note, every student and every heart she touched.....
