Shirley Chisholm (1924–2005) was a trailblazing American politician who became the first Black woman elected to the U.S. Congress in 1968. Representing New York's 12th District for seven terms, she later made history as the first Black candidate and first woman to seek the Democratic Party’s nomination for President of the United States in 1972. Known for her motto "Unbought and Unbossed," she was a fierce advocate for education, anti-poverty programs, and civil rights.
