Music stems from our world like a flower, its petals drifting into our view on a gust of wind, a flowing stream, on the hood of a car.
I reach out and capture the fluttering leaf in my palm, my hands closing around it holding it still. The crash of the drums, the steady rhythm of the bass, the energy or lack thereof of the vocalist grab by memories my emotions as they flutter down from my mind, my eyes, my heart.
I may forget this instance in a year but this song will not, within its lyrics, underneath its tempos it holds a moment I am placed into when the sound hits my ears, my bank of memories, where was my mind? The song sparks me to find out, to remember, to live what has already happened, to reflect on the state of things at the time.
When the music plays I feel my emotions change, I feel them bounce along with the beats, my mind wandering with the chorus, it is a playlist of emotions always on shuffle play. Music connects generations, my parents pass their emotions on to me, they pass the significant sounds of their lifetime to a new set of ears. This music is my core and every day I add to it, I build from it, and explore my emotions, my preferences.
Rhythm can bring connections to others. Their music holds significance most likely different from your own, possibly similar. Music is history just as you connect to the people of today you can connect with the people of the past both unfamiliar and familiar. The genres are so vast you might never hear the same thing twice like snowflakes in a storm.
Music is a medium of communication, feeling, history. I walk down the block and although I may not hear it music is all around me, music is in me. My musical library represents me, if in 100 years somebody would stumble across it I would be pleased to have it represent the person I was. The music that fills your day like a refreshing glass of water on a blistering day or a hot cup of tea on a winter night comes together to create a combined lyric, a song of yourself.
