@smilelearning

It's going to be another exciting year as Schuylerville's Technology Integration Specialist. I began this journey when our district went 1:1 iPads in the 6th grade a few years ago. I found a passion for technology and wanted to learn how it could be best utilized in the classroom to foster learning for all students. What I have discovered are other passionate teachers, amazing resources, integrated learning experiences, and engagement at levels I hadn't experienced before. This page is a place for you to learn about my journey, certifications, accomplishments, and more. If you have any questions about integration of technology used at our schools, please reach out to me at my email, or follow me on Twitter @smilelearning. I couldn't be more excited about being #TOSA (teacher on special assignment) here at Schuylerville.

Badges and Awards

Nyscate Volunteer hall of fame member

In November 2017, at the annual conference, I was inducted into the hall of fame for NYSCATE volunteers. It was a great honor to be included! One is chose for this award based on years of service to NYSCATE, involvement in the conferences, and in making a significant contribution to our profession.

Osmo Ambassador

Osmo is an amazing platform that works across curriculum. The app connects the iPad to the student in a unique and extremely interactive way. Students can complete challenges using Tanagrams, math and ELA interactives, and coding. The app is also amazing for your budding artists in its engaging games. This app can be used with the very young and all the way up to high school. Students with special needs love the interaction with the drawing monster and can easily manipulate the game which allows for great success without frustration.

Breakoutedu authorized trainer

BreakoutEDU is an immersive and interactive activity to use in your classroom. Our school has 5 boxes and they are always out in classrooms and engaging students in their lessons. They have been used in first grade all the way up to our professional development sessions.

NYSCATE Social Media Team Member

NYSCATE (New York State Association for Computers and Technologies in Education) hosts many amazing conferences, workshops, events, summits, and certifications throughout the state. The annual conference is held in Rochester, NY in late November and is a wonderful opportunity to network, learn, and share resources. Come find me at the social media booth this year! I'll also be presenting during the pre-conference in a two hour hands on session called ABC's of Apps and during the conference about adding coding across the curriculum.

The EdTechTeam has many avenues for learning, but one of my favorites is their blog. I have been fortunate to be a guest blogger for them over the past year. You can read more about their blog here.

Recap is a free app that allows teachers to ask students questions and for students to have a voice in the classroom. Through open dialogue, and preset journeys, teachers can ignite curiosity, engage in student's interests, and foster student's critical thinking skills. Watch this video to learn more.

Nearpod PioNear and certified educator

Nearpod is the first app I ever used with students in my 6th grade classroom when we went 1:1 with iPads. It's an incredible program that allows teachers and students to engage during lessons in ways that were never possible before. Through premade, or by creating presentations, teachers can interact with students through questions, drawings, polls, and amazing activities such as 3D images and 360 degree field trips. Formative assessment and student engagement is a breeze with this incredible app. Students have an easy way to take notes right on the slides either during a live presentation, or they can go through the presentations at their own pace through Google Classroom. Students have access to the classroom even when absent. Nearpod is also a leader in ELL programs, and in making it easier for teachers to continue teaching, even when they have to be out of the classroom through the Nearpod for Subs program.

Buncee lets creativity shine for both teachers and students. Teachers can create amazing presentations, that can stand alone, or be used with Nearpod, to keep students engaged. Students can use Buncee for all sorts of projects and activities in the classroom including #Booksnaps, digital storytelling, group projects, reading and writing workshop reflections, and publications. It's a great community and I'm proud to be an ambassador!

Tynker blue ribbon educator

Coding is the language of computers. It is used in every business to some capacity and is becoming just as important as reading and writing for students to learn. Tynker is a great programming site for students to learn on because it teaches all types of programming languages in fun and engaging ways.

Seesaw ambassador

Seesaw is a digital portfolio app and website that allows students to showcase their learning. It integrates with just about any other app and website which makes it a great foundation for all activities in the classroom. The app also allows for easy communication between the classroom and the families that want to connect.

Google Educator

The G Suite for Education offers an incredible set of tools for teachers and students to use in the classroom. From organizing files in Google Drive, to the amazing ease of Google Slides, the suite is powerful for empowering students to create their own success.

Amazon teacher innovator

Open Education Resources (OER) are free lessons and activities for teachers to use in the classroom. Amazon has created a platform to allow teachers to share those lessons, free of charge, for others to use. With all of the changes to the common core standards, NGSS, and the next generation standards coming, it's great to have a place to share best practices and lessons that meet the ever changing educational landscape.

EdTechTeam teacher leader

The EdTechTeam is a wonderful organization that offers professional development, support, and global connectivity. Through their online courses, books, webinars, and master classes, they offer relevant training for teachers.

The Apple Teacher program encompasses all of the amazing apps that come standard on the iPad. The interactive iBook lessons give loads of ideas about how to use the apps effectively in the classroom.
