This book was a great listen! I cannot recommend the audiobook version of this series enough.
We jump in after Emika has re-entered the normal world and with Hideo scrambling amidst Warcross protests (due to how the first championship ended). Emika is still the only one who knows what Hideo is really up to and is determined to stop it - determined enough to contemplate joining Zero's side and sabotaging WarCross.
I can't go into the actual plot too much without giving so much of the first and second books away. What I can say is that the second book is the last in the series (I LOVE this whole duology thing that's going on! So much better than trilogies!).
I can also say that there were moments where Emika looked like she was back to her amazing, decisive self but then quickly reverted back to being bossed around by others. I was kind of sad that she never really came back to being a take-charge woman. I didn't particularly care for how things ended for Emika.
I missed the presence of WarCross (which happens in tiny portions of this book). It was so exciting in the first one! This book takes place much more in real life than in the digital world. However, the Phoenix Riders were an amazing group, and I truly enjoyed how they functioned together. The introduction of new characters was also a strong plus and the development of Zero's character. Zero - and his past - is by far the most fascinating part of "Wildcard"!
While "Wildcard" lacks in the action contained in "Warcross", it satisfactorily wraps up the duology.
(The book's description from Goodreads)
Emika Chen barely made it out of the Warcross Championships alive. Now that she knows the truth behind Hideo's new NeuroLink algorithm, she can no longer trust the one person she's always looked up to, who she once thought was on her side.
Determined to put a stop to Hideo's grim plans, Emika and the Phoenix Riders band together, only to find a new threat lurking on the neon-lit streets of Tokyo. Someone's put a bounty on Emika's head, and her sole chance for survival lies with Zero and the Blackcoats, his ruthless crew. But Emika soon learns that Zero isn't all that he seems--and his protection comes at a price.
Caught in a web of betrayal, with the future of free will at risk, just how far will Emika go to take down the man she loves?
