Westfield Middle School's National Junior Honor Society is based on four key principles:
Service - Students who are willing to make voluntary contributions to the school community.
Leadership - Students that are problem solvers, promoters of school activities, idea-contributors, dependable, and display positive attitudes.
Character - Students who consistently demonstrate the P.A.C.K. qualities and serve as an example for others through their words and actions.
Citizenship - Students that demonstrate maturity and responsibility through their respect for the school community.
Why become a part of NJHS?
Who is eligible for National Junior Honor Society?
Any 7th grade student who maintains grades of 89 or higher in all subjects in Trimester 1 and 2 is eligible for membership in NJHS. Students who qualify will receive a letter of notification shortly after the en of Trimester 2. The applications and selection process takes place after the end of the second trimester.
Students who complete the application are selected by our faculty council using these criteria:
Citizenship
Leadership
Character
Service
Attendance and discipline are also considered during the selection process and may result in non-acceptance
Do I have to apply? No. Membership in NJHS is optional. However, if you choose to apply, it is a commitment you agree to keep. Meeting attendance, academic scholarship and service project completion are mandatory. Discuss with your family your responsibilities to make sure this is a good fit for you.
I've never filled out an application before, what are you looking for? We are looking to find out how well you meet the criteria of service, leadership, character and citizenship. It is important to take the time to read the entire application and the rubric before you begin. This will help you to get a clear understanding of the expectations. Once you've done this, be sure to complete the entire application carefully. It's also a good idea to have an adult family member read through your completed application to double check your work.
Late or incomplete applications, as well as failure to demonstrate grade level academic expectations such as using complete sentences, correct capitalization, and proper punctuation will prevent your application from being processed.
If I don't get into NJHS, does that mean I can't get into the National Honors Society in high school? No. Membership in NJHS is not a requirement for membership in NHS, nor does it guarantee acceptance in NHS. However, the skills of leadership and service that you will develop in NJHS will definitely give you an edge.
What happens if I don't get accepted in 7th grade, can I try again next year? Unfortunately no. Membership is open to incoming 7th graders only. However, there are other clubs that offer opportunities for you to demonstrate leadership and service. Builders Club, a part of Kiwanis Club, is an excellent alternative to NJHS and does not have an application process.
What if I get in and change my mind next year? While membership in NJHS is a commitment, things can change between 7th & 8th grade. We just ask that you let us know you are no longer able to participate so we can take your name off the membership list.
What if my grades drop after I get in? It is your responsibility to maintain your academic standing. While we recognize that grades can fluctuate throughout the trimester, it is your responsibility to keep track of your grades and be proactive about getting back on track. Using extra credit to improve a faltering grade is not viewed as maintaining academic standing.
If I get accepted, what will I be expected to do? All members are expected to provide service to the school community through the Legacy Project. This includes at least 10 service hours, so you must be able to devote time outside of school to the project. You will also need to earn two hours of service not related to the Legacy Project. A list of possible options will be made available to you at our first meeting.
In addition to these expectations, members must attend all of the mandatory meetings held after school, maintain an average of an 89 or higher, and demonstrate quality of character while in school. Disruption to the learning and/or disciplinary referrals may be cause for dismissal from NJHS. Please see the bylaws for information about this process and appeals.
