Student Government Overview

Student Government is the voice of the student body and helps share ideas, interests and concerns with the school community. Student Government is an organization made up of students who plan school events, promote school policies and develop initiatives to better the school community. Members are elected by the student body and are guided by adult advisors. The purpose of Student Government is to give students an opportunity to develop leadership skills, advocate for the improvement of the school, communicate with administration and staff, foster a community of respect and equality, and become proactive in community services. All members of the student body are considered active participants of Student Government and are encouraged to participate in the events and initiatives sponsored by SG, to offer suggestions and to express concerns to the official members of SG.

Responsibilities and Expectations for Elected SG Officers: 

• Serve as a Student Government officer one whole school year (subject to evaluation of performance and behavior by school officials).

• Attend Student Government meetings after school to propose, plan and evaluate initiatives to benefit the school community.

• Attend other meetings assigned to SG during and/or after school hours.  

• Participate in all Student Government events and activities.

• Responsible for promoting school spirit, unity and respect among the student body.  

• Responsible for maintaining communication between the student body and staff.

• Maintain a good academic record, passing all classes every marking period.

• Refrain from engaging in or promoting inappropriate behavior as described in the Hillcrest Handbook. 

• Maintain a 95% or better attendance.    

• Take minutes during meetings and email to all Student Government officers and to the advisor.

Student Government Election Process

Eligibility for Candidacy:                                                                                                              

To be considered for an elected SG office or SLC representative position, a student must provide the following to the advisor by the designated deadline, which this year is September 29, 2023.

1. Verification of academic standing by guidance counselor.

2. Letter/email from the dean's office to verify the candidate's disciplinary record.

3. Submission of a campaign statement with a picture.

4. Submission of a photo/video consent form.

Campaigning and Election Rules:

1. Candidates may not run for more than one position.

2. If, after submitting an application, a candidate decides not to run for office, the application must be officially withdrawn from the election by emailing the SG advisor.

3. The current campaigning period is from October 2nd - October 17th, 2023.

4. Campaigning is defined as: anything written, designed or spoken by a candidate, or someone else on their behalf.

5. Voting is a private and confidential activity. Candidates must allow students to vote independently of their influence and/or assistance.

6. All campaign literature/material must be in support of an individual candidate. Foul language, untruthful or misleading statements, and offensive or obscene images are not permitted on campaigning material. Negative campaigning is not allowed. School officials have the authority to determine whether material is inappropriate or offensive. 

7. All candidates must respect each other's campaigning material by not taking them down, placing other materials on top of them or writing on them. School officials will disqualify any candidate who engages in this type of behavior and student may be subject to disciplinary actions. 

8. All campaigning literature/material must be pre-approved by school officials. 

9. All campaigning literature/material must be placed in assigned Student Government  bulletin boards.

10. Campaigning may not occur in classes without pre-approval from the teacher and must not disrupt classes otherwise.

11. All candidates must adhere to the Hillcrest High School Handbook for students.

Voting Procedure: 

1. All students will receive an official Google Form ballot to cast their vote on the designated election day, which this year is October 18, 2023.

2. The ballot will show candidates' names, position, picture, and campaign statement.                                                                                                           

3. Students are allowed to vote once.  

4. The winning candidates will be announced on Monday, October 23, 2023.

In the event that an elected officer does not fulfill their responsibilities as determined by the Student Government advisor and school administration, they can be removed from office and the position will be filled through a special election.
