2020 Winter Issue
By: Dora Chen
I am your canvas
Paint me with the colors of the seasons
Every three months
That you are by my side
You brush your blue and white pigmented fingers on my ear
The stinging winter between us
Hearts breaking
With the crackling of the ice bursting in my eardrums
Your hands pour pink and green into mine
The blooming spring introduces itself
Serotonin drips down my fingers
Flowers blossoming upon my fingertips
The yellow on your palms streaks onto my forehead
The fiery summer ignites
A high fever swells up
Thoughts of you never left my mind
Then, our final season together
Fog lingers on the foliage in the grey morning
I blankly stare at the rising sun as
You dig our graves
You wipe my red and orange tears with your thumb
The chilling autumn overwhelms us
Leaves plunge to the ground
Like our souls escaping the mortal world

I chose to draw a groundhog because I’ve always loved Groundhog’s Day. My favorite season is spring, and I like to think that the groundhog’s cute little face represents a change in season, attitude, and flora. I didn’t want to draw a landscape because I draw those a lot, and since I don’t really draw animals, it was a fun experiment.
I took this photo when I was in Kyoto visiting a shrine. I really liked the symmetry and composition of the rocks around the pond which is why I decided to take this photo.

I took this photo in August when I was visiting Japan. I thought that it was a rare opportunity to see two butterflies close together like that so I decided to take a picture.

I decided to make a collage of landscapes from last summer. Even though summer plans were cancelled for many people, it didn’t change the beauty of the season. When people were allowed to start going outside once again, I went to Central Park and decided to take photos because of how pretty and empty the park was, making it incredibly peaceful. This is when I got the idea to make a collage, so I also took a photo of a lake taken from when I was in Upstate New York, as well as a beautiful red flower from my grandmother’s garden. Hopefully this summer we can go out and enjoy the amazing season of summer.

Acrylic on Canvas
This painting is inspired by the season of summer. I chose this season because throughout the last few cold months, I have been excited for the upcoming warm weather. I decided to capture summer by painting the first thing that comes to my mind: the beach. I emphasized the clouds because I enjoy painting them, and think that they bring the painting together. Additionally, I included a tree because it adds character to the beach scene.

My digital drawing is a portrayal of a bouquet; sunflowers being the main subject sitting in the spotlight of the sun. I made the drawing with many warm tones all around in order to captivate that warmth and sizzling heat during the summer. Moreover, the warmth in colors bring a sense of happiness and a place of sanction and home. Then the addition of brighter tones and colors in the flowers captivates the eye of the viewer to draw them towards the main subject without feeling out of place because of the warm hues that overlap. The reason why the piece is called strawberry sunrise is because like the drink, it has the gradient of a sunrise. The piece has an overtone of red, while the flowers and background itself has a lot of yellow, making it seem like a sunrise. All in all, this piece captivates the beautiful flowers that have blossomed over the spring and carry on over the summer, while emphasizing the summer heat so much that the audience can even feel it on their skins and the joy that many feel over the summer.

I took this photo when I was walking home from school and wanted to capture the fall leaves.

My intention with this piece was to create an illusion of what autumn is like to me by using warm colors, movie scenes, symbols, and other imagery that reminds me of fall. This was done to compose most of the person’s face. I included bright blue eyes and a strip of blue paper with snowflakes on it to distort the face, and show how the changing of seasons can be predicted and seen before it even happens.
The title is inspired by the phrase “beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” I chose this because despite the fact that this collage-person represents all the beautiful factors of fall, there is a certain acceptance of the fact that these factors must make way for winter. Winter has its own beautiful factors, and we can see them each year as they come.
I struggled with composing different parts of the face to derive the bigger picture, but ultimately I’m proud of how everything came together.

The changing seasons,
Oh, the power they hold,
As the magic unfolds.
I seem to be cold,
While the trees look bare,
I am covered with warmth.
My jacket, my gloves, my boots,
They come forth
to protect me,
from the numbing pain.
White freckles,
Fall,
Fall,
Fall,
Fall,
Fall.
Colors sprout from thin air,
A pause in time,
A pause in my mind.
Hear the birds singing with joy,
See the trees spewing life,
Smell the flowers releasing hope,
Taste the winds,
who weaves through my heart.
Touch the sun,
who peaks from the clouds.
Oh, how beautiful it is!
Oh, how wonderful it is!
Heat pounds on my back,
Trying to push me down.
Yet I laugh and play,
As it is no use to fight the sun,
Always there to watch.
Hovering over me,
Making sure I feel its glory,
Making sure I know it’s there.
However,
it leaves
Only hiding for dusk,
A symphony of yellows, reds, and browns,
Create a painting of colors.
Slowly losing their grip,
As if weakening in strength,
It is a pretty sight.
Yet, something feels off,
As winds bring me to flight,
Swooping in either direction,
The heat is losing,
And the cold is starting to win,
Once again.
The loop starts over,
And continues-
With no closure

The series of photos is a handpicked collection of the four pictures that I feel best to reflect the four seasons of our world. The spring photo was taken during a splendor afternoon where the specs of sunshine that peaks through the shady trees above add a warm touch to the tulips below illuminating its beauty. Then the summer photo was of teens under the gleaming sun on a hot summer day, daydreaming about what lies beyond the vast ocean that looms behind them. Next comes the autumn photo where the mellow sunset out a blue to beige was as if the season had sung a lullaby to the sun, telling it to fall beyond the horizon with the warm hue like the brown leaves falling from the chilly breezes of the night. Lastly, the winter photos capture a sparrow finding shelter within a crowded tree dusted with the first snow of the year too scared to let go of its last sense of consciousness, afraid of what might come next. Though each photo exhibits every different area of our common world, some close-ups, some far shots, some with a point of focus, and some with a whole scenery to take in. I want the viewers to find the common points within the set of photos; something that unites the seasons together. I hope you found a point that mellows the four distinct pieces of work into one coherent world!

Dear readers,
As the snow of the winter melt, and as the seeds’ of the plants sprout. Spring has once again returned upon the place where we all go about. With all the craziness going around, our goal for this issue was to give people a chance to step back and observe their surroundings, maybe even fantasize about the world too. The theme of this issue- seasons -really just derived from us wanting to take some serious creative license this year in light of what had been happening. In the wake of the season, the talented member of our club took inspiration from changes they have witnessed all year round to bring forth what you are about to witness. As we take you on the journey to experience the span of seasons, bring yourself to the world we built while we embrace the incoming change of phase!
Sincerely,
Michelle Ye, Enkang Jiang, Paulina Yushuvayev.
