What exactly is a Peer Collaborative Teacher and a UFT Teacher Center Instructional Coach?

Peer Collaborative Teacher (PCT)

Role and Focus:

• Internal Support: PCTs are teachers within a specific school who support their colleagues by fostering collaboration and enhancing instructional practices. They work within the same school where they teach, providing peer support tailored to the school's needs.

Responsibilities:

• Mentorship: Provide one-on-one or small group support to fellow educators, particularly those who are newer or seeking to refine their teaching skills.

• Professional Development: Lead or facilitate workshops and training sessions tailored to the needs of their school.

• Intervisitations: Promote and facilitate intervisitations, where teachers observe each other’s classrooms to share insights and learn from one another.

• Alignment with School Vision: Drive the vision and goals of the school administration by supporting instructional practices and initiatives that align with the school's objectives.

Context:

• School-Based: PCTs are embedded within their own schools and work closely with colleagues to support the school's specific needs and goals.

UFT Teacher Center Instructional Coach

Role and Focus:

• School-Based Support: UFT Teacher Center Instructional Coaches work exclusively within specific schools, providing support and professional development to enhance teaching practices.

Responsibilities:

• Coaching and Mentorship: Offer individualized coaching and support to teachers, focusing on improving instructional strategies and addressing classroom challenges.

• Professional Development: Design, run, and offer CTLE (Continuing Teacher and Leader Education)-accredited professional development opportunities, tailored to the needs of the school and aligned with state certification requirements.

• Resource Sharing: Provide instructional resources, tools, and strategies relevant to the school’s needs.

• Teacher Advocacy: Serve in the best interest of teachers, focusing on their professional growth and needs, rather than directly aligning with the school administration’s vision.

Context:

• School-Based: UFT Teacher Center Instructional Coaches are dedicated to specific schools, working closely with educators to support their professional development and instructional practices.
